2000 punto mk2 1.2.

My engine has been running poorly in the last few months but was particularity bad this week.

Often in the last few months when I stop at traffic lights engine will vibrate badly as if struggling to idle. This week its actually cutting out. So far it has always started up again after. Same thing will happen when on motorway but engine will just loose power rather that cut out as the wheels will keep it going. Will regain power after about 10 seconds. While driving around suburbs today it was cutting out every few hundred yards. Not getting any error codes. Sometimes the car will drive absolutely perfect.

I had similar symptoms about 1 year ago, though less severe, and replacing the throttle body solved the problem.

Any ideas? Thanks, Conor

Thanks for the response. I removed throttle body and cleaned it out about a month ago.

Rough running - cutting out - low power

All says to me its misfiring....
When were plug and leads last done?
Bearing in mind dying coils can also produce this symptom too...

I think like alot of puntos a basic ignition tune up is required

I did the plugs about 20,000 miles ago. Leads or coil packs were never done since I've owned the car.

I was told before by a mechanic that "if it's the coil packs, it will generate an error code. No code, coil packs are fine." Would you agree with him?

Could be a breakddown on Ignition leads Insulation, Always worth changing them when plugs get changed and as you say they haven't been changed

Two of the HT leads don't quite click on to the spark plugs like the other two do. Could that suggest that they are they culprit?

Are these the stock HT leads? I can't seem to find any similar replacements online.

Making an effort to clean that oil off the lead might make a big difference. The lead is supposed to be insulating the electrical conductor inside so the power goes to the spark plug rather than the side of the engine.
