2002 punto jtd has the following issue that from parked the speedo works until after a similair amount of time the speedo stops working as the handbrake warning light comes on..
The amount of time until it happens varies but it is the same scenario.

The things I've tried are adjusting the handbrake cable, topping up the fluid.

On on an odd occasion the speedo has come on intermittently while driving..

Bit odd it has a strut brace but it was already doing this before fitment.

If this rings a bell with anyone I'd be much obliged if you can shed some light.

Thanks josh.

Do you have abs or u non abs?

As this will provide a big clue

Abs cars are all done via abs pump and sensors

Non abs are Speedo sensor driven,

For handbrake light - ensure brake fluid isnt dangerously low

Hi thanks for your reply.. It is an abs model I don't have a abs light on though and multiecu scan isn't showing a fault with the abs..

This started when the car dropped on to the rollers at mot station.. However the handbrake cables and shoes were renewed for the mot at this time.

I'm stumped as for a mile at most the speedo works.

The fluid is OK.

Cheers hope you can help.

Literally handbrake light comes on speedo needle drops.

since the rear shoes and handbrake cable were changed i'd suspect something with the ABS causing the issue.
I'm guessing it was all working fine before those were changed, so it would be the most likely culprit

Yeah I can certainly see that logic thinking about it the drums I swapped from a mk1 my mate was scrapping...
Only thing is on the way to the mot it was working for 5 miles.
And the speedo is intermittent but always works from a restart for roughly the same amount of time.... Bit odd and bloody frustrating.

Oh dear I also swapped the hubs so im guessing that's the problem.. If anyone knows if the drums are any different on abs models please chime in..
So much for some free low milage replacements.

Also I don't understand why the only error I've got is vehicle speed sensor missing signal and no abs light.

Does the abs light come on during self test? And then goes off?

As for mk1 hubs - they were mostly non abs, as a result there is no tone rings on the hubs

Probably fine if fitted to a non abs mk2, but since mk1 usually didnt id be checking hubs actually align up correctly for the sensor pickup and the pickup ring is present in tact
If there missing then no speed signal can be gained for the wheels

Swap back or refit correct parts

Mk1 and mk2 are different cars

Mk2 and mk2b have alot more interchangeable

OK thanks ziggy yes it's a schoolboy error on my behalf.. The punto they came off wasn't abs so that will be the problem..
Do you know if the drums would also be posing an issue, is there a difference as I used the mk1 drums besides the fact they aren't abs what I mean is does the abs use the drum for any data as such.

No abs light on self test so that will be blanked then... Not by me
I can confirm you can feel the abs kick in
Under heavier braking.

gonna bump this.. As something odd happens when the speedo needle drops and handbrake light comes on...
The power steering gets lighter bit strange and the fact that the amount of time that the speedo works for,
I am going to replace the rear hubs for some abs units silly mistake.

you need to before someone gets killed
the power steering turns off at 30 so the driver has feedback from the road it needs the abs to be working though as this is where the data comes from just like the speedo needle

OK thanks for filling me in on that..

I know it's not great do you know if the drums have anything to do with the abs, eg a difference between abs and none?

to end this thread check parts from other cars for compatability before putting them on your own..
New hubs speedo working and no more handbrake light..

Yes I feel silly.

It seems that I have a similar problem with my 2000 1.9 JTD.

It started Saturday, the ABS and handbrake light came on, and the speedometer and odometer stopped working. And yes, the steering wheel felt funny, too. However, nothing was modified in the past few months, except for the shock absorbers which were substituted in October with compatible ones.

In other threads I have read that it could be:

  • low brake fluid level;
  • oxidised earth points;
  • moisture in fuse box;
  • battery going the way of the dodo.
Now it's sitting at the local car electrician/artisan, and tomorrow I will have him check the above points.

Other things I should ask to check?

Quite possibly an abs sensor, obviously mine was a complete self inflicted cock up..
But as I put none abs hubs on the abs had no reading so a faulty sensor would be likely.. I would run multiecuscan as mine had missing speed signal error.
