Technical Problems connecting an ELM327 bluetooth to my 1999 punto Mk2

I got a cheap Chinese ELM327 bluetooth module, but I am having some issues accessing my 1.2 8v 1999 punto computer with it.

In AlfaOBD it connects, but then I can't connect to any control units.
In Torque, it connects and I can read out data, but the power steering light turns on while using the module, that can't be good...
I haven't tried multiECUscan yet because I don't have a laptop with bluetooth.

I'm suspecting that my ELM327 module is a bit dodgy because the Chinese skimped on components and/or didn't adhere to specifications.
Do I have a better chance with a module such as this, with a PIC18F25K80 controller?:

Or does anyone know of a module that will work well with a 1999 Mk2?

Thanks for the suggestion. I also happened upon that post, but it seems that according to my multimeter there is no connection between pin 6 and 14. Also, the resistors are not very accessible (see attached photo) and unfortunately the value is not printed on the resistors.
