Hi,
I was driving home yesterday and when i changed into first i heard and felt a pop and i can't change gear gear stick only moves back and forth really loose.
It seems to be half stuck in third cos if i ride the clutch and keep high revs it will drive.

I thought my gear linkage had just popped off but its all attached.
Is this my cables instead that have snappes instead?

If gear change cables connected at both ends , ask someone else to move stick forward and back , watch levers on box and see if there is movement. If you see no movement the problem is likely to be with a cable.

Its not uncommon on older puntos now
They are snapping due to rust build up further down the cables

Since ur now stuck in gear thats a bonus u can atleast limp it to a garage or home

Do the suggest post above while looking at the linkages which sre below and behind the gearbox

Tbh id stick a 2nd hand set on as new aint that cheap

Ziggy

Thankyou for the quick response.
I'm going to check it later when i finish work and get my mate to move the gear stick whilst i check linkage for movement.

Rang my local scrapyard and theyve got a few punto's in so going to pick some up tomo.

theres two types of gearlinkages
make sure you get the right one
if you can get the car up on ramps its possible to remove the plastic cover under the linkage whilst on your back and just change the broken cable
its always the same cable that breaks so leave the other one
you would need to drop exhaust if changing the kit kaboodle so changing cable only is a logical easy fix
if plastic covering screws wont undo consider using a heat gun to prise the cover off over the screws
you couls silicon the cover back in place or use the one off the scrapyard box
finally look to be paying £25 to £30 for a complete linkage setuop
