So, my punto 1.2 8v has now got 83000 miles on it. The cam belt's not been changed yet :p

How difficult is it to change the belt, tensioner, and water pump myself? I couldn't see a guide for the 1.2 8v timing belt in the guides section.

83000 on a 8v is okay hahaha
8vs are safe engines so if the belt breaks or u mess timing up no biggie

Basic sockets trolley jack / stand / lump of wood

The belt has timing marks - google it, u honestly cant gst it wrong

Water pump will just take longer as u need to drain coolant and bleeding on a punto is 100% a nightmare

Ziggy

You say if the belt breaks or I mess up timings it doesn't matter? Do the valves and pistons not interfere then?

I've got all those tools. Think I'd definitely like to try it, would rather spend a few hours on it myself than an admittedly quite fair price of £90 from my mechanic for doing the belt and water pump.

Just for reference my 8v 2004 is on 89.5k and still on original belt
Not gonna change it till it starts to shred or it snaps

Ziggy

I've noticed an intermittent noise coming from the area after the car's been idling or generally at low RPM for long. I just think it wouldn't hurt to rule out the timing belt. idk :p

U run risk of belt snapping at any point
Either u need good recovery or just good roadside repair ability hahaha

90£ aint a bad price
But u might as well learn

Yes the valves can be open and pistons tdc and they wont make contact
Non interferance / safe engine

The 16v's do damage

So I haven't actually changed anything yet, I was just poking around earlier to familiarise myself with the bits I'm gonna have to take apart.

When I went to undo the first bolt for the upper housing of the cambelt, it must have been rusted and snapped, with surprisingly little force, and parts of the lower housing secured by this bolt we very brittle and basically disintegrated.

I've tried to show in the pictures. My question is, that with the other bolts in place it's the housing is still on securely. Like I can rock the engine grabbing hold of the housing where the bolt is missing. Do you think I can get away with leaving this?

Wait a minute, I think I underestimated the task. So I have to undo the driver side engine mount, and take off the alternator belt and wheel?

1st off, for taking off the engine mount, I only have two axle stands. I'm assuming to support the sump the car would need to be lifted on both sides... So do you reckon I could get away with using my jack under one side of the car and the axle stands for the sump and the other side?

2nd, how on earth do you take the alternator belt and wheel off?

I guess I'm not doing this job today :p

no need to remove wheel or lift car on both sides
if you dont have hydraulic jack use trolley jack to support sump, put a piece of wood between sump and jack, lift it up and then undo engine mount
if you got aircon its a little play to but belt back on

I sorta don't trust just a jack holding the engine... I seem to have to go under the car for some bits, wouldn't want the jack to fail and an engine falling on my head.

Also I was thinking the alternator wheel was in the way of getting the lower cambelt housing off, but of course if I'm taking the engine mount off then it wouldn't be  :D
