Technical Subframe rust

Technical Subframe rust

Stab it with the screwdriver like your life depended on it.

It does pretty much.

You might be able to get through this time but I would take that as an opportunity to get another subframe and prep it properly before fitting. I fitted the new subframe as found because I had limited time but I'd have liked to paint it first.

Update: Been removed the frame, have apply rust remover and rub with wire brush. After clean with high pressure water jet leave to dry. 90% of rust is gone, now I have apply three coated of red oxide primer now the next should I apply Hammerite waxoyl underbody seal or just the original black gloss spray?

That should not have failed MOT. had you taken somewhere else probably would pass.

Now painted, good, spray with Black Hammerite stone chip , 2 x 600ml cans

I got replacement subframe £40 from an Italian registered car that was in scrapyard here in UK. (no rust in Italy). Painted it, good as new.

Difficult to find a UK registered car with no rust on subframe in scrap yard.

Yes I agree every scrapyard frame is corrosive, a new one is £324 from Fiat dealer that is why I restored it to like a new. If anyone have problem with rust frame is recommend to repaired yourself save amount of money! Thanks for advice (y)

If u cant be arsed to wire brush it clean
You can alwayd pay to have to sand blasted
As you have done there rust treatment and decent coatings

Black will be better itll hide dirt better vs red on the under belly.... plus itll look a hella lot more original too!!

But that looks like surface rust to me tbh....

When I am put it back I will take photo for you probably it will be next weekend, it is not that difficult as you think.

Undo both wishbone lower ball joint at the bottom behind the disc and separate it
Undo both wishbone frame 2 bolts each and remove wishbone frame off
Undo exhaust clip under the oil sump that hold the exhaust pipe
Undo nuts both end of flexi exhaust pipe and remove (not whole exhaust pipe!)
Undo anti-roll bar four bushes metal clip and remove the anti roll bar steel pole
Undo the gearbox one rubber mounting (loose it rather than take it off)
Undo 8 bolts on subframe put jack in middle to hold the frame is weight approx 12kg
It come off easy.

Update: finished paint waxoyland leaving it for 2 days to dry. This morning I put it back all my job is complete and I feel very happy with it till later today I look on Fiat parts for anti roll bar bolts, but I have spot there is missing plate on my car it makes me wonder was the factory forget fit or my previous 2 owner? I have the car for 2 years now it don't make any noise.

Are this the most important parts? and what it do? I feel can't be bother to take all it off again to just insert only 4 plate

They are very thin
i think they acted as a gasket
i used to hold them in place with masking tape then once all bolted in just pull the excess tape off
dont worry about them
