Help !!

Purchased a Fiat Punto 2 moths ago, just over 3 years old, now outside warrenty....it's developed a nasty problem while driving...everything just dies, the lights on the dash vanish...stereo cuts out...engine dies...instantly, luckily this happens just as the car is pulling away, so it's not happened at speed yet

If you try to restart the car it turns over but won't start, still no lights on the dash....but on the 3 occasions it's happened after a period of about 10 minutes it will restart...lights on dash return, it's as if the electrical system has reset itself

Garage claim to have run a diagnostic test on it and found nothing unusual..would really love some advice as this car in my opinion is not safe to drive...could it be something simple like an earth problem

Hi Thanks for the welcome

Yep !! had the AA out the 2nd time... and it started first time, typical, but while the guy was there he checked the battery connections to see if they were fine, he mentioned a bad connection or a short somewhere, but wouldn't the diagnostic pick that up ??

A bit more history, it had a new battery 1 month ago

Good Point regarding the diagnostic test

AA just advised what the problem could be as at that point the car was running ok, as for the Earth strap that's another good point to make...the car is still with the garage, I would have thought the mechanic would have checked that...but it won't hurt me to mention it tomorrow when I call them for an update

many thanks

Faulty ignition switch perhaps??

It's not unknown and mine had the same symtoms that you describe.

Instrument panel dead, but engine will still turn over and a lot of the electrics will still work.

I found my fault when the garage couldn't. I turned the ignition switch on very slowly and some times everything worked, sometimes nothing worked and sometimes some panel lights would come on dimly then go out.

Worth a try

Guys thanks for your suggestions

The Garage has spoke to their contacts at fiat and guess what...the mechanics at fiat claim they've not heard of this problem before...talk about being in denial

Anyway a possitive note has happened they've agreed to swap the ignition switch to see if that cures the problem....the earth suggestion was a good one
about a week before it came back from the garage, they replaced the rear bushes due to the noise the rear suspension was making, it's a bit coincidental this new fault appeared so soon after, as I believe they have to drop the rear axel do do this...do you think if something was not put back correctly this could affect the earth....???

my local fiat garage sabotaged my speedo, after it had been in for its 62k service (apparently needed something done that only they could do, but infact anyone can do, ass's), came away and my speedo was reading about 20% too high!!

Fiats are OK cars, not great but OK, but the dealers want burning at the stake

Cutting out isn't a common problem on punto's,been a few VSS problems but thats it.
The nearest earth point is in the boot(under n/s/r light 188 version)nothing near the suspension area.

"Fiats are OK cars, not great but OK, but the dealers want burning at the stake"...ahhh could do with some heat on these cold wet mornings:D

Have you fix the problem!?
I have the same one!

Hi Danijels

so far so good....I've been driving it for several weeks now, and touch wood it's been fine

The Garage had it for about a week and were test driving it, I know this because I checked the mileage before it went in.

One thing they did change on the advice of another suggestion mentioned by another guy on this site was it could have been caused by a faulty ingition switch which they agreed to change....and since then it's been fine, so this may or may not have been the problem

let me know how you get on
