Well, that's it.

After 15 years of faithful, reliable service it's finally beyond the point of repair.

Just failed MOT. In short, back end is now rotten. The mechanic refused to quote on it, and told me to not waste any more time or money on it. I agree with him.

So, painful as it is, it's off to the scrapyard tomorrow and (maybe) £30 cashback. Apparently, that's the going rate at the moment...

Time to upgrade.

It was fun while it lasted.

When Scrap was good - i got £100 for old Punto
Done and Dusted

But shortly after the rate fell...

Tbh there isn't any point breaking for parts at all...

15years is very very good going, still room for more
But when Car cancer kicks in - its in

Im dreading the day mine goes....

Totally agree, once it's in....
If it was a classic car, it would be well worth taking the time.
I think once you've done the first bit of welding, that's the warning flag.
I'll post some pics when I get a minute.

The scrap merchant was saying that they are well known for rot at the back. Seems inline with what other mechanics have said, and what you see on the forum.
Small tip: remove the rubber grommets on the sill, fill and underseal the holes. They just trap water.

Ours headed the same way methinks. Failed last NCT on sill and floor. Got away with a fifty for welding by a guy who works on MGs up the mountain but I reckon the clock is ticking.

yes, more than the head gasket kit I recently bought...

I also got 2 online quotes: £0 and £10.

Still, can't be bothered breaking it for parts. That would be too painful.

you could put junk wheels / tyres on though .. same amount of metal for your £30

and @ 10 mins of your time..,;)

my Cat C X reg was completely rotten in the floorpan - I reckon it must've been flooded out..

like you say it's time to draw a line:nono:

got a plan for the replacement car..?

you could always get a solid Mk2B for peanuts and swap the good bits,

still getting your £30

Sorry to hear about that. How much can you get a mk2b for?

2102 plate 33k miles punto @ ~£4k at local garage.
TBH, I'm thinking about a radical change. I've been looking at a Nissan Leaf. Can get a 2 year old model for ~£9k on 0%.
After maintaining the Y reg for the last 5-6 years myself, together with all repairs (apart from welding), I think I could use a break.
Bucket of unused parts in the garage to get rid of.

the MOT man did a thorough investigation with a screwdriver :)

I could see the following in the next few years (excluding the welding):

1. New brake lines - I already did the near side front in copper nickel. Doing the back is much harder without really good access.
2. Clutch
3. Fuel tank strap
4. All brake flexi hoses, rear drums and back plates, rear cylinders, shoes.
5. Both back springs (did fronts ~ few months ago, after one snapped)
6. New front shocks (I chose to forego the shocks when doing the springs as I knew the MOT fail was probable)
7. New back box
8. New battery

A fair bit of money, and more importantly: quite a lot of time.

I'd considered a LEAF myself a couple of years ago,
but wasn't sure it could cope with my commute.., then they bumped-up the prices..:bang:
so I bought a new Twinair(y)

been really good - just don't mention depreciation` ...

the LEAF would've been better AND I could charge it for free in my new job:bang:

They really work off some frustration with those screwdrivers :)
We don't have the same salt issue so things are not as far advanced although most of your list is on mine. Won't be getting sucked in even though the car is almost family.
Time to have a hard look at what we actually need.

When I think how much my life has changed in 15 years....

You're right not to get sucked in. The trick is to judge exactly when. If I was doing it again, I would call it a day after the first set of back floor pan welding, take the MOT pass, and take my time for the next purchase. Maybe even get a trade in :)
