Hi,

I recently bought a Fiat Punto 2003 1.2 8v that has only done 53000 miles. I've had it for roughly 2 weeks and have noticed the development of a ticking noise within my engine that started of at a little tick and has now developed into a very obvious noise.

I've linked below two videos. One before a journey and one afterwards.

/watch?v=olCvh1yeYHE Before

watch?v=1nvwpe3Gaw8 After

Just go onto youtube and copy that text and past it at the end of the url.

In the video you can also see that there is oil leaking from the engine which I'm not sure was there before but I think that it has developed recently.

I also think that there has been a loss of power in the engine and I feel the car juddering a lot more but that might me being more alert to the car because I'm cautious about the developing problem.

I went to a mechanic and he mentioned an oil change. It has its last one done around 4000 miles ago.

I also know that the cab-belt is due for replacement around 60,000 miles.

I would really appreciate any input into what the sound may be and thank you in advance for anybody who has taken he time to have a look at my problem.

The oil level appears to be fine, I've checked it many times over the past week or so to ensure that the leak wasn't major and the oil level seems to remain consistent.

the leaky cover is simple..look in the GUIDES for more info,
ticking noise.. no idea.. could be something simple. or something VERY serious,

check coolant level..
do an oil change anyway..
has the car overheated at any point..??

The car's temperature has never gone high even on hot days in traffic. As for the oil change I will be doing that tomorrow so hopefully that fixes the problem. I will keep you updated!

Thank you for the reply!

The 8V engine has manually adjusted mechanical tappets. It is normal they must be adjusted as the car ages. I do not think an oil change is going to make any difference to that tappet like sound.

The fuel injectors can also be fairly noisy and make a similar clicking noise.

The handle of a long handled screw driver pressed to your ear can help you trace exactly where the noise is coming from - just be careful with the rotating parts when you do that.

(Sorry if this is duplicated, I thought I posted here yesterday but no longer see my reply)
