Hi all, first post so I hope I'm doing this right?
I recently bought a 52 plate Punto Active Sport 8v for my daughter, but of course it only has one key, it's blue and quite worn, (it has a Code 2 stamp on it) and I normally have to fiddle a bit to get it to turn. I need to get a second key, but if it is 'copied' it will copy the wear as well, so should I get it cut from the code? I don't have a note of the key code, so where/how do I find it? and does the new key have to be coded to work. I have been given conflicting info so far and dont want to waste money if I can avoid it. Can I remove the lock barrel and give it a clean and some lube to help things?

Thanks to all replies.

mk2 uses the KeyCode2 system - hence the littler 2 stamped into the key

Most Key cutters should be able to accomodate for wear, when they cut a new key, but you will need to ask them first to make sure

As for coding - Yes im affraid it does
The Key mechanicals can be copied, but as of yet - i dont believe the keycode 2 system cant
due to the fact it uses a Rolling code - so its changing all the time, the car though - always understands it :)

This coding needs to be carried out at a dealerstealer - Or at a decent Auto-electricians, who has the ability/stuff to code keys

----

Most punto's on import had the Key code Cards Taken out due to insurance complications
So 99.9% i would say of punto's DONT have there key card
This means you will have to ask a fiat dealer todo this for you - again at cost
i think even auto sparkies need the key code card as well

Ziggy

That would explain why both my old mk2 and my current Grande haven't had the immobiliser code. Out of interest, why did they have the code cards removed?

The key code for your car can be found printed on the lock barrel of the airbag lock. It's also in some cases stamped on the side of the ignition lock. Although in both cases it's missing the prefix which for a mk2 is WO and for a mk2b is DE. The code can also be worked out from just looking at the key.
You can get a new key cut then transfer the immobiliser chip from the old key to the new one. If you have no one local that can do it for you I can do you a new cut key by post.
If you want a second key I can supply and program you one. But would need access to the car to program it so depends where you are.

According to Fiat it was because the insurance companies requested they be withheld on security grounds. Although that doesn't really hold water as Peugeot/Vauxhall/Citroen... always have and still do. Supply a card with the codes on.

Hi all, just want to thank you for the informative replies, I managed to find a local locksmith who came within an hour, cut and coded a new key from the code, now works like new. Thanks again. (I cant seem to find a personal thank you button?)

For anyone in the Edinburgh area, the total cost was £78.00, the locksmith was Stephen, you can get him on 07798 505291.
