When reversing, if I accelerate hard, it pops out of the gear.
I have noticed that I can put it into reverse without having to lift the sliding thing on the gearstick up to clear that plastic stop. I can also get it into reverse lifting the thing on the gear stick shaft up.
It's quite off putting when it pops out - more of a very loud 'thunk'!
I can't see there is any adjustment anywhere though - the cables snap on at each end, and there's no adjustment on the levers on the gearbox?

There was a bit of a rattle in reverse before I changed the gearbox oil.

Is this normal?

I start from stationary. And accelerate. It'd be a quick start if going forwards. It doesn't matter if riding clutch or clutch fully engaged. But fairly reasonable torque applied to reverse gear. If I accelerate slowly I can drive in reverse no problem.
Reversing up a steep drive it will definitely pop out - I have to go up in first.
Is there any gear selector adjustment for reverse gear position?

what if you hold geae stick in gear? does it still pop out

Yep. Held it in and it popped out.
I recently changed the left to right gear box cable, it was a part for part swap, I checked the number. And I changed the gearbox oil with

There's also a bit of fresh gearbox oil on the left to right lever on the gearbox...must be leaking out from where the shaft goes into the gearbox? What would this indicate?

All other gears are fine. I bough the cheapest gear cable I could find on ebay. Could it be its the wrong length?

Yes I think so. I matched the part numbers exactly on ebay - but the one that arrived is actually a couple of cm shorter.
It was very cheap though. Nevermind. Thanks for help.

There is on the back and forward movement cable. This one is the left to right.

Are you really using that tractor transmission oil in the punto?

It says it should not be used for hypoid differential gears or where GL5 is specified......I am supposing the punto differential is a hypoid gear which grinds up some oils

The recommended oil is an extreme pressure GL5 oil.

Best thing to do is put it in gear and pop off the cables and see how it reverses. I don't think the oil will cause the gear jump problem

It's a manual gearbox- no hypoid gears in it I don't think.
That Tractor stuff is what Italian Auto Centre use down here in Otahuhu?
