Hi,

I purchased a 2001 (Y Plate) Fiat Punto 1.2 8v from auction on Friday.

When driving home the engine management light came on, solid at first then flashing.

I have had diagnostics on it and the codes were P0303 Cylinder 3 misfire.

This was followed by each of the injectors fault codes P0201, P0202, P0203 & P0204.

These codes were saved and cleared.

Looking under the bonnet it appeared that the plug wires were set to 4,1,3,2 rather than 4,1,2,3 on the coils.

We changed these over and had some success but the juddering maintained (although slightly better).

We checked the timing belt and this was fine.

After changing the discs and pads I fired it up and went for a spin round the block. As soon as I got a couple of hundred yards the flashing engine light appeared again.

I've seen a few posts were people have said that it might be the coil pack or the ECU and wondered if anyone here could shed some light on the situation.

I am awaiting a new diagnostics check and will post the details when have them.

Thanks in advance

OK,

Diagnostics run again and this time just the P0303 Cylinder Misfire code.

Going to buy no ignition coil pack and see if that solves it.

Try a known good battery first. I had same error changed coils, same was ready to purchase ECU but thought to change battery first and it's been fine since and the error no longer shows, plenty people say change after 2.5 years regardless.

Yes but worse with all the electrics on including power steering. If I sat with steering dead straight and no electrics running it was ok. Soon as I turned something on electric windows, power steering heated window and lights the revs dropped then misfired while I was driving or idling. If you could try a different battery without purchasing a new 1 it would be better.

Update.

So changed 1 ignition coil pack and put in a new battery.

Took it for a spin but after a mile the flashing engine light came back.

It then disappeared when slowing down and then came back when revving.

As I have the basic instrument panel I can't say how many rev's it triggered the light at.

Any more ideas people?

Thanks again.

Also let me add, and this may be unrelated or not, but when I switch from sidelights to main lights there is a constant whirring noise as if a motor is turning/working?

Not sure if this is related at all.

Thanks

could be head gasket, do a compression test

Thanks, I'll check in the day light tomorrow. Won't be able to do the compression test as no equipment.

What about the constant whirring noise when switching from side to main lights?

Thanks

The headlights have a motor that raises or lowers the beam for loaded unloaded condition on dip beam (switch on left just under the instrument cluster), only works on main beam NOT sidelights or Main Beam. It's only supposed to make the whirring sound when it's working i.e. when u raise or lower the beam

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's what it is but its constant and doesn't stop. It sounds louder on the drivers side when I listen to each light. Can anyone tell me where to disconnect this or is it simply a fuse I can remove?

Thanks.

Here's a quick video of it in action:

Ignore the flashing dash lights as this was the camera doing this for some reason

The compression check for HG failure is a very good suggestion for these cars. With its age you should suspect it may need to be done, plus for an auction car with a clear issue you should assume it's been sold knowing it will need doing,or slightly worse someone's already done it but not properly.

It's straightforward and cheap, plus also with an unknown car you plan to refresh and revive, you should change all the fluids i.e. coolent, gearbox oil, brake and clutch lines. And check all the brake flexi hoses for cracking...

Hi,

Yeah we've checked all round.

New spark plugs and leads, new filters and clean oil.

Will endeavour to give the compression test a go today.

Do we not think that it could be the ECU then?

Thanks

In the techno age we have a tendency to jump on the techno-est fault possible. Common faults occour commonly. Check the battery and connections especially the big earth strap to the top of the gearbox. What are the rear lights doing when brake or indicator is on. Check the black wire earth pins in the rear cluster plugs and that ecu earth to the throttle body.
Many ecus are replaced without eliminating the simples.

Ok,

So checked the manual and can't seem to find the earth or earth straps and wondered if anyone could assist.

My ECU only has two cables and no black earth i've heard about?

Also sometimes when I indicate right it ticks fast and sometimes it ticks normally.

The engine management light will go off when sat stationary, then flash, then solid. Its a real mixed bag.

I've attached some images and wondered if anyone could highlight where I need to concentrate my time.

The positive cable for the battery looks a bit muddy? Will I get a shock if I try to clean it?

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Yes you need to remove air filter box to get to earth attached to throttle body/carb. Black wire take off and sand clean. Check earth on clutch housing from battery.
