Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows any known spots that may leak coolant on. I see where the masses glycol but not where it is leaking from. It doesn't look to be the hose that goes from the expansion tank into the engine, maybe it's higher up?. Red arrow shows where the mass glycol.

It leaks about one decilitre per day even while the car i stationary. I changed the thermostat a few months ago, but it sits on the other side of the engine, it should not have anything to do with this.

It's a Fiat Punto 1.2 16V 80 [188] -2001

Any suggestions, please?

Just above the drops the thing between the plastic cover and the engine is the water pump.

The pump is the silver thing in this picture

Thanks for your reply. Okay, so it could be something with the water pump? I've read somewhere else that a o-ring connecting a hose and the water pump sometimes is damaged.

The o-ring goes on the steel pipe where it fits into the engine behind the water pump. The rubber hose in our pictures fits onto that pipe with a T junction. You can see the T junction in my picture.

When the engine is running if you put something solid on the water pump you will be able to tell if it sounds alright if you put the other end firmly against your ear. If the pump seizes up your engine will be very badly damaged as it is driven off the cam belt and you have an interference engine.

Great info judderbar! Do you know the part number for the o-ring we are talking about? Could it be 55185066? You will see pictures if you google it.

I cannot say for sure, but the ePER link on this web site at the top on the blue line of this page, is showing that part number for your car.

Looking at your picture that steel pipe does not seem to be leaking though.

Thanks for the link!

Okay, I will have to look further, but do have any idea where else the leak is? Isn't the steel pipe located there?

Maybe it's the water pump itself that's leaking, thanks for suggestion flisko

Two ways water pump can leak:

1. Seal from pump body to engine degrades.
2. Internal seals begin to go on pump, and leaks out of weep hole.

Look on the bracket that holds the cranks sensor: it it's wet on top, good chance it's the pump.
It can often seep along the joint between the sump and block

Thanks for the responds. I'll take a better look at the water pump at the weekend with the help of a car knowledgeable friend. I'm writing this when I know more.

Two things strike me. First your engine looks amazingly clean, no sign of road dirt or muck, no oill spills, what mileas have you done and has the timing belt or water pump been changed. Second is has the coolant been changed recently and is the leaking since this. Glycol antifreeze will search out the slightest leak.

It's the cleanest Punto in this planet ??
150 000 km and the timing belt was last changed at around 70 000 km, it really need a change now. I replaced the coolant a couple of months ago when i replaced the thermostat.

Yes, and I hope the leak is sitting only in the water pump since it was needing a replacement anyway.

It is an interesting exercise doing the water pump as you have to do the timing and there are no timing marks. You can do it with DIY methods though. There is a guide here which some have said is rubbish but there is no reason why you cannot do it yourself if you are careful.

why not just make two marks-line on each side, top and botom, and when putting it back all lines must align, cant go wrong unless you lose markings

4 marks. Two on belt, two on engine :) I suppose you were saying that anyway

Also you need to turn the crankshaft backwards a little bit to enable the belt to be fitted without tension and then turn it forwards to get the tension on the water pump side, and to do that you have to move the pistons independantly of the cam so positioning the valves safely seems necessary.

Then if find you are a nervous wreck before starting the engine, you can easily double check everything is correct.
