There was no spark, so does that mean fuel pump?

I thought it may have been the cam belt, but although quite slack it was all in place and turning.

Thanks

hi,:)
had this on a panda,
the cambelt had jumped , and was 7 TEETH out of time,

being an 8 Valve, no damage done, slacken tensioner, re-time,
drive for another 5 years:worship:

if your car has the "rubber bung" oil filler cap then it's a SAFE engine;)

Does that mean the ones without rubber oil cap aren't safe, even though 1.2 8 valve. 2005 eek

The 8 Valve is a safe engine, but you you need to ask your mechanic if he checked the valve timing if the belt is 'quite slack'. Are you talking about the belt under the plastic covers or the visible one? Normally there is only one visible one and that is for the alternator/electrics

Yes timing belt under the cover, it seems slack to me but I'm no mechanic, it was turning fine, no teeth missing.

Would the tdc make the car stop as it did?

2002 punto with rubber oil cap, I guess the last of the fire engines

The belt should be sufficiently tight that you can only turn the longest part of it sideways with your fingers. Slack sounds totally wrong.

Yes. The engine stops if that crankshaft sensor fails.

Well I think the timing may be off then, as I can move the belt off the pully, although I haven't but it's that slack.

Thanks

I've not heard back from the mechanic, is there a way I could check it, what should I be looking for?

If the belt can be easily moved off a pulley, that has to be the first concern.

Agree'd

The cambelt been that loose will suddenly cause powerloss/stall as timing could jump

Im the timing jumps - the suck bang squeeze blow will be way out of order with the valves opening

It may be squeezeing with the valves open = No squeeze
It may be sucking with the valves closed = No intake and a vacuum

In all the time I've had fiats travelling 40,000 a year (32 years) had snapped timing belts, teeth ripped off and changed 3 crankshaft sensors 1 of those was a ford focus, never had belt jump, not impossible and will cut the spark if its far out of line, just saying from my experience. However this Doblo will put an end to getting another one.

is that true? if belt snaps it wont bend any valves?, pistons and valves both move, surely they will hit eachother, unless its freewheeling engine?

Ok it's been a few weeks and the saga continues.

I ordered the crank sensor and nothing happened, at this point there was no starting sound at all, so suspected the starter motor, called another mechanic as the other wasn't replying, and he thought the same, so we replaced the starter, car started but began spewing water from water bottle and smoke was coming from the top just behind the air filter, so now he suspects it could be a head gasket problem.

The engine struggles to start but does with a bit of left leg on accelerator but doesn't turn over for long. At least I managed to move it on the drive.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
And is the head gasket a relatively doable job, if it is this?

Thanks

And there's no evidence of gunk around the water bottle, oil cap or dipstick.

certainly sounds like HG failure, as in major fail, i got charged £280 that included water pump, timing belt new coolant, head skimming and oil and filter. Just make sure it won't fail its next MOT due to rusting underneath or you wasted you're money. that was a couple of years ago but don't think prices have changed to much.
