So I did an oil change today - been a long time since I last did one. Moved from 10W-40 to 5W-40 - Shell Helix Ultra Engine Oil

I also bought a new voice recorder so decided to try recording the sound of the engine

I was wondering if anyone can hear any issues? Everything is stock.
Does everything sound normal?

I'm a bit worried about the sound I can hear at 1:18 second - I'm not sure what it is.

Also the high pitched electronic noise at around 49 seconds, is that normal?
I've always heard it when I turn my key to the first position but never known if this is normal.

Any issues or suggestion please do post below.

I was considering changing the spark plugs, something I've never done before. I don't know if it's possible to hear if there's a problem with them from the engine sound.

I don't have the tool to open them up so not yet inspected them.

Also it should be noted I usually start the car with the clutch pedal pressed in, I believe this is what it said in the car user manual so there is a change in pitch when I take my foot off the clutch

The 2nd recording was the very first time I started the car after the oil change and new oil filter was installed.

Electric sound is normal.
Noise between 1:08 - 1:38 doesn't sound right. Can you isolate where the sound is coming from? Record the noises around the cambelt and alternator area as well as the gearbox on the other side for us. The second start also sounds a little "laboured". Is the battery good?

Laboured Start ... 2nd start was the very first start after I changed to new oil and new oil filter so I'm sure it's to do with that - plus bringing in oil into the oil filter for the first time. Battery is fine - I just replaced it a few months ago and I had a CTEK Smart Charger which I use to keep it in good condition.

- what worried me a bit was on that very first start of the engine the trip computer read 32MPG and started going down to 18MPG. Normally my car says 28MPG on first start and starts going up to 35 MPG as I drive.

I've yet to go for a drive in the car since I changed the oil yesterday .. so I'll probably do another recording after I've driven it a bit just to compare.

Not sure what the noise is after 1:08, will investigate further or maybe film with a camera and upload that.

That noise around 1.18 to 1:26 could be the water pump as my 16V water pump failing sounded like a dry bearing noise very similar to that. On the 16V you can see the side of the water pump at the front of the engine under the exhaust on the left hand side of the engine at the height of the metal pipe that goes behind the exhaust and goes into the engine on the left hand side. Try putting the blade end of a long handled screw driver on the metal of the pump and the other end to your ear. If the pump is making that noise you will easily hear it is the same sound as you are hearing at the same time without the screwdriver and you can easily tell it is coming from the pump rather than the nearby metal even though it is bolted to the metal.

Otherwise use the screwdriver here and there till you locate that noise

Sounds good otherwise.

Worth bearing in mind that if the water pump seizes on a 16V engine it will more or less destroy your engine as the cambelt will stop and the pistons will smash your valves.

Pump is the silver thing in the picture.

I dowt changing oil will vary cause the water pump to be suddenly noisey

To me I can hear a very metallic noise, like clutch fighting with itself or a gearbox thats rattling its tits off...

When it making thr noise - dip the clutch, does it siddenly go quiet?

Ziggy

My water pump sounded just like that. He seems to have detected the noise after testing out his new voice recorder.
