Hello all,

I was driving to work the other day and my car started to lose power and the engine light came on solid and I decided to get a diagnostic it came back that the coils had both gone so I was stuck with a car firing on two cylinders unless I replaced the coils.

I took it to a garage and the man fitted coils and still the same problem.

he tested the spark plugs the leads the lot and found no problem (he didn't charge me ) no fix no fee so he said it has to be the ecu.

so I called a fiat specialist and they quoted 450+ vat +labour (n)

I have seen afew threads on here that say people have had the same problem so I have ordered a plug and play ecu self learning thing haha (mr technical) I will fit it myself and see if this solves the problem and hopefully this will help somebody.

I am not a mechanic this job seems simple enough.

if the coils are confirmed okay
and the sparks and plugs are confirmed as been okay

Then it leaves just the wiring and ECU

tbh, wiring failing is VERY slim

The ecu failure is due to a lack of maintenance

When the coils/HT/Spark plugs become overly resistive, the ecu gets overworked, and the track inside for coil triggering is burnt out - burn back so to say

Only way to fix is with an ECU specialist or a donor car with lots swapped

I had exact same problem mate and had to get a ECU from ebay for £90.

Its easy to change just take the air box out and then its just 2 alan key bolts holding it in place.

before you buy a ECU you will have to check which type you have you can do that by taking the air box off then putting a mirror behind the ecu and it will tell you on the barcode.

Heres a picture i took of mine with my phone the other day when i was trying to figure it out.

I managed to take the photo by shoving my phone right behind there and just taking loads of pictures until 1 of them managed to focus on it.

The bit you want is IAW 5AF P3. Obviously yours could be different but once you find it you will be able to find a virgin ecu on ebay that will fit your car then its just a case of swapping them out.

iaw5afp3 for mine just hoping it works for me the catches to get it out are a pain in the a## any tips for getting them to twist I cant seem to get the catch to press :bang: but I paid 79.99 for the part just the waiting and worry game now haha thanks for the reply. (y)

Ziggy saw your video on youtube (if it is you) sounds the same as my engine mate so yours was leads . . . . hope I haven't jut bought an ecu for nothing hahaha

today but mechanic tested leads so cant be them  or can it . . . . I will test the ecu if no joy I will send back

Not sure how to get the ecu leads out my mechanic mate did it for me because im useless with cars.

But i was in the exact same boat engine light was on, said it was ignition coil b. changed that was still misfiring so changed leads and plugs and still was and it ended up being ecu in the end.

just tried to start car and it just turns over but engine won't kick in removed ecu mine gets delivered tomorrow so its the waiting game to find out

Ok had a really crappy day at work thinking about this part and when the time came to go home I ran to get back and my part had arrived (ecu) so I got the tool kit out fitted it and :slayer::slayer::slayer::slayer::slayer: it worked my car is alive again thank you all for your help hope this comes in useful for someone its saved me a lot of money.(y)
