Hello, Yağçırmaş.

I have recently acquired a 1.9 JTD Punto with 205.000km on the clock. Being my first Turbodiesel, I'm interested in the maintainance at such relatively high milage.

  • Oil and Filters are understood
  • At 205k also the timing belt should be on the clock
  • (as is probably the clutch sooner rather than later)
  • An injector cleaning with diesel purge shouldn't hurt
  • Also cleaning the EGR and air intake
From what I read, adjusting the valves isn't necessary as they seldom are out of adjustment.

Anything else I might have to keep in mind?

205000km isn't that high for a JTD TBH. Mine was on about 250000km when we sold it, and it was still going strong. And that isn't a unique case - there are plenty running about with similar or higher mileages.

The bodyshell condition is important as Ziggy says. For the rear brakes, don't be surprised if you need to have the ABS version of the brake shoes even if you don't have ABS on the car (my car had this).

I always used full synthetic 15W40, changed as per the service interval and had no problems.

Fuel filters can be a little messy, but not difficult, air filters are dead easy too.

A cambelt isn't too hard to do on these - the injector pump isn't timed like the 16v version.

Other things to keep an eye out for is the crank sensor failing (cutting out when warm, then starting again after it has cooled down a little), the front water pipe rotting through or the rubber lines to it failing as they run very close to the oil filter and can get quite oily. MAF sensors can fail as well, if the clutch fails then chances are the flywheel will also need looking at and replacing if necessary.

All in all, the JTD is not a bad little unit. It was the best bit about my Punto. In fact, I'm considering getting another JTD Fiat (but a much bigger vehicle).

OK, thanks. Chassis will of course be taken care of, and I'll have a look at the wiper linkage.

I've looked at a JTD Sporting with 300.000km, too. No doubt about longevity of the engine.

Found it.

It has an error about the glow plug control, which shouldn't be that wild from what I read.

But what concerns me is a, how shall I describe it, pitter-patter during acceleration. The heavier I accelerate, the louder it gets.

Edit: Filled up with V-Power Diesel in the hope that it might clean the engine, now it's completely quiet. But bloody hell, the thing drives to the moon and back with a tenner worth of fuel. Came home with 21.6km/l (61 MPG) on the dash.

I got it up to >25km/l, holy moley.

But pitter-patter comes back sometimes, yet after the V-Power it got a lot better. Also, the MPG go down to 18km/l when the pitter-patter is there, so likely a leaking injector.

I also found two defective glow plugs and a timing belt that is reminiscent of Angela Lansbury's face.

Wish me success replacing either one, after two days of looking at it it seem that a long 10mm socket with a joint inserted from the front might work for the glow plugs. A workshop manual would definitively be nice.

...and shall be known as a glow plug socket.
