Hi all,

In the process of replacing my HG.

Reading around the forum and from Autodata I understand these are the tightening stages:

stage 1 20 Nm
stage 2 30 Nm
stage 3 angle tighten further 90 degrees
stage 4 angle tighten further 90 degrees

tightening order
8,6,2,5,10
7,3,1,4,9

As the later stages use an angle gauge to stretch the bolts, is re-torquing required after 1k? If it is, what should I be torquing to?

Thanks,

Jon

If they do need re-doing it's news to me. I've not come across angle tightened bolts on water cooled motors needing that. Ours certainly didn't get done twice and it's happy as a sandboy. The only things I do it on are old aircooled lumps from the 80s. The torque is pretty low in the first place and needs checking every 3k or so.

NO NO NO NO NO

somebody on here did that - it only made problems worse for him

If you torque the head bolts up correctly the first time
(little smidge of lube in a clean thread)
you will be perfectly fine for it all :)

Remember to ensure the head bolt holes are 100% clear of muck and oil
If they have oil in them - you could risk hydro-cracking your block as you torque down
