Hi,

I have a few problems but i've not seen any threads with exact problems as my 1.2 8v 2004 punto.

Firstly I have thick black smoke coming out my exhaust constantly wether or not the engine or hot or cold and it's black staining the road when parked up and when moving or revving you can see lots of black smoke coming out and it stinks inside and outside of the car.

Secondly when reversing or setting off in 1st or 2nd gear i have horrendous loud rattling coming from underneath the car i'm assuming its a loose exhaust or something.

Thirdly i seem the have a loss in power but its not all the time it sometimes occurs when changing from 1st into 2nd gear and i lose alot of power and the revs drop right down as if i've accidently slipped it into 4th if that makes sense.
And the other power problem is when going up hills i know now its only a 1.2 engine but sometimes i have to drop into 2nd in some extreme cases just to get up a not so steep hill and its really embarrasing.
Finally on power when i'm on motorway or bypass accelerating to 60 or 70mph the revs jump up and down as if its gaining then losing then gaining power.

Oh and my mpg is really bad recently hitting 19mpg round town and 28mpg if im lucky on long journeys when it used to hit like between 40 to 45mpg on long journeys.

I'm on the verge of getting rid of it because its costing so much money.
It's 1.2 8v 2004 77k on clock
Just to help anyone heres whats been replaced so far.

- HeadGasket
- Radiator fan
- Battery
- Wiper motor
- Clutch
- Starter Motor
- Catalictic Convertor
- o2 sensor
- Air Filter/Oil filter
- Spark Plugs
- Handbrake Cables

SOMEBODY PLEASEEEE HELPPP

I've had the clutch and starter motor done at one garage cat convertor from another. After changing the cat it did make a slight difference for about two days.
But as for the rattling whilst in first and second gear thats been gettimg gradually worse since i bought the car :/

Yea engine management light is on it went off after i had cat changed then about a week later it came back on :/

I've got one at my work i can use. Used it just before i got my cat replaced cant remember exactly what it said think it was a injector sensor or something but i'll double check and post it on here along with codes.
They thought most of my problens were because of the cat needing to be replaced but obvs not :/

hi,
to me it sounds like it's seriously overfuelling,

probably why the cat died.. better get the fault fixed before you poison another cat..,

read codes.. BUT then take it back to the garage- they obviously haven't fixed the underlying issue..,

As Charlie says, it is overfuelling.

A) Misfire caused by poor plugs, leads or coils.

B) Thermostat stuck open, so engine not getting properly hot.

C) Temp sensor giving false reading, telling ECU it is cold, when actually hot. (Note: probably two temp sensors, one for the gauge and another for the ECU.

Ideally it needs MultiECUScan plugged in and watching the readings as it warms up to see if the readings match expectations, but a simple code reader is a good start.

Thankyou everyone for the help :)
Going to get it scanned asap and i will post what is says v.soon

The Punto uses just 1
1 Feeds the ECU
The ECU feed's the signal to the dash

Met this problem, I think I found the solution.
So, my engine started stalling on idle, so I started to find the cause. At checking the spark plugs, they were all covered in black deposit wich is caused by missfire/uncomplete burn at the cycle. I've tested the camshaft rotation speed sensor and turned out there was the problem, as it guides the ECU in petrol injection quantity.
Spark plugs black=rich combustion fluid (to much petrol).
My sensor was not broken, just not put in wright. I got it out coples of days before and when I put it back on, did not pay much attention to it.
So it turned out that the oring around it was not in place and was kipping it higher than normal position, so at a wrong distance from camshaft.
I tested it with a multimeter (as shown on youtube) but I did not striped the cable, just put a small cable inside the plug and press it just to make contact, not all the way while testing (just discribed this so you can test the sensor without striping its cable, as it shows on youtube instructions to do it).
And testing the sensor I could see that it is sensitive to the distance a metalic object passes it by, and readings drop at very close distance. So I greased its oring to fit in nice, wich it did, and all is good, engine runs smoothly again.
Ps: by having the sensor a little more distanced than its place, ecuscan did not read any error, as sensor sent signal, just miscalculated the fuel injection
