Ball joint came away from hub this morning- fortunately at slow speed- Any idea what I need to get or why this happened?? Ball joints only come with a complete arm will this be all I need???
Thanks for any advice (good job I wasn't doing 95mph on the motorway)

Most likely not fitted properly.

The grove in the ball joint pin is locked in place by the bolt through the hub assembly, as the bolt is there and the pin on the ball joint all looks in good shape I can only conclude the pin wasn't pushed in to the hub assembly fully.

Basically some muppet who fitted it could have killed you

My thoughts exactly. Fortunately, if it's ever lucky to have a failure like this, balljoints tend to go at slower speeds because the loads are higher. A new arm is on the cards one way or the other , I would be a little concerned about what damage might have been done to the seat in the hub - needs checking out.

Why is this cropping up slowly but surly

Bottom ball joint wear should be picked up by MOT man, the guy doing any work should have check his work after as well!!

You MIGHT be lucky and get away with refitting correctly
But any damage occoured on the ball joint itself or the hub where it mounts could mean your looking at a repair bill

What work HAS been done recently or last?

Ziggy

Hmmmm this is what worries me- Both hubs came off a few months ago for new wheel bearings- It was MOT'd a couple of months later by the same guy that fitted the wheel bearings and assembled the hubs........hmmmmmm

The other one may not be far behind. Time for a wee chat with a certain mechanic.
Ball joints break but I have never known one to open of it's own accord.
