Hi,
it's a fault light, and will store a fault CODE in the ECU,
get the cODE read, and will help diagnose the problem,

does the engine still run+ sound o.k.?,

COULD be that it's not burning the fuel properly, and unburnt fuel is passing out of exhaust.. NOT good if that's the case,

It still sounds okay, and it doesn't judder or anything. Seems to be running stably and sounds fine, but then I don't know much about cars :p

Shall I have a look at the exhaust pipe whilst it's running?

I'll get a code reader too.

probably a poor spark,
worth checking coolant + oil ( to rule out Head Gasket)

reading fault codes is the best way..
MultiECUScan is great for Italian Vehicles..
but IF you've other brands then any OBD2 reader will do the job, just remember they will ONLY do ENGINE codes,
so airbags, ABS , PAS etc you'll need something better- like MES,

Hi again,
remove dipstick , ( with COLD engine on level ground )
clean / dry the WHOLE thing , the Hi + low levels are the FLAT hatched part,
BUT you should still have a "drip" on the lowest point of dipstick,
TBH - IF it's THAT LOW,
you may as well do an oil change,
as you're going to add 50% of the required oil now anyway..
