Hello,

I just brought a punto X reg this weekend and previous owner told me that when the petrol gauge is under 1/4 it has a problem with fuel can anyone suggest ideas of what this could be and how to fix?

Thanks :)

Could be that the gauge is inaccurate, so when it is showing 1/4 full, it's actually nearly empty and sucking all the rubbish from the bottom of the tank. I suppose the best way to check would be to let it run down to 1/4, then completely fill the car. If you fit 45 litres in there, then you have a gauge problem, 33.75 litres, then it's something else.

I'd get to the bottom of the tank fuel wise

Disconnect the fuel feed to the fuel rail
apply the ignition - do we get fuel?

it could be that the float inside the tank has become damaged causing a false reading to occour
Which is a pump out job im affraid, but you can then atleast clean the fuel filter while your there - since it wont get chance to be done again

Thank you, I will give this a try. Its not a massive issue just keeping the fuel above 1/4 at the minute but just would be something nice to get sorted.

Hi, first of all would check the float of the fuel pump, and the fuel tank for dirt, another thing you can test is the tension with a multimeter when you manually move the the float

kind regards,
BT

Turned out to be a little piece of rubber which I could not find where it came from and managed to get a replacement fuel pump for free of a guy who was scrapping one of the same age. :)
