Hi guys! in the last 2-3 days i have droven my fiat punto 2002, 1.2, 16v
the consumption on the cars display(dashboard) has dropped to 11.6km/l and is still dropping down! Before it was around 13-14km/l when i bought it 3 weeks ago!

Can someone give some sort of a checklist to check on the car for this problem? or have anyone had something similar with very much consumption of fuel?

Hello.

1stly. check the tyre preasure's/all 4.

A service might help too. Air filter/oil filter..oil change etc.
the 16v needs irridium spark plugs.

Cold weather..makes abig differnce with mpg too.

11.6km/l = 27.2mpg
13km/l = 30.5mpg
14km/l = 32.9mpg

Thats for us UK folk, as we use something else

As for 27mpg is a little low in the Uk term
it all varies on alot of factors

Such as Weather (cold = less mpg or less km / l)
Tyre pressures been low
Tracking can mess up mpg as the tyres scrub
Load in the car
Traffic
Driver
Even changing tyres can cause a change

Atm in the UK were in winter - its cold, and icy some mornings.... so we are lower down on mpg

Has the car also been recently serviced?
Whats changed recently?

A code read and live data review would also help - it might show a failing sensor such a lambda or map

What i would do because the reading is very unreliable is disconnect the battery and then connect it again. This should reset your clock and then drive for a while and see if it gives you a better reading. If not thats when i would work the fuel economy out manually

I will try that!

All tyre pressure is fine

I live en Denmark, but the wheater is not so cold theese weeks. Only max -5 cold.

It had service from 2 years ago and the oil looks like it should be.. golden/light-brown.

The airfilter has been cleaned. But i will check on the irridium spark plugs.

I'm going to do a code reading here in two hours and return back with the result

I'm back!, and i made a code reading on the car and it showed nothing. The tires was checked too. And on my way home it dropped down to 11.4/L. its only decreasing!

I will soon buy a new lambda sensor, and hope for the best

I will soon buy a new lambda sensor,

Why?

no EML rough running etc.

You are wasting your money.

If you mean Engine managment light, then correct, the light is not coming on the dashboard.. Then what is your advice for fixing this big consumption?

Change sparkplugs
and airfilter.

as i said earlier..but you replied with.. its been serviced two years ago.

fair enough.
but what was changed on this service..did you see it done?

id think on that. :)

-5C is pretty cold for us (appreciate it might not be that cold for you)

I would be inclined to block off half the radiator and see if things improve it could just be running too cold all the time especially if you are running the heater high to warm up the cabin

Thats true. I will buy theese two things tomorrw. But i have seen the airfilter with my own eyes, there is dust on it, but I got it of with airpressure?

I acutally use the heater very much, because the is very cold in the morning and it takes some time before it have heated up. Maybee i should stop doing that for a while

Upto you.

But..airfilter is cheapest service part.(or atleast they are over here)
Spark plugs..with them needing irridium ones are expensive.
the cheaper ones dont live long.

if its gone well on a last service..2yrs +
just think servicing it well again..wont be a waste of your coin's.

the 16v engines shouid bring in around..36mpg..not sure what that is in kMs
in the winter months,
mine used to loose 4-5 mpg. (that ididnt worry about)

Hang on....
Its very cold where you are
You regulary use the heaters to keep warm

Is the temperature guage getting to half way and staying there?

Because if the car is running cold (isn't warming up) it'll run rich and bye bye mpg / Km-L

Ziggy

Hi Ziggy.

No i have noticed the temperature-"arrow" not always is on the half, where it should be, its sometimes just right below

Hi Ziggy.

No i have noticed the temperature-"arrow" not always is on the half, where it should be, its sometimes just right below

So its not ever getting upto temperature?

There's is the possible culprit, the car isn't ever getting upto operating temperature where its running efficiently as possible

As a result - it stays a little bit richer to help it warm up
Richer mixture = Lower MPG / KM-L

As I said block off half the radiator, this will prevent the cooling via the radiator but also limit the flow of freezing cold air into the engine bay, you should find this helps a lot
