:bang: Ok, todays joy find on my new purchase. The engine is getting hot when sitting in traffic etc. The temp gauge goes up (hasn't hit the red light yet, i usually put the interior fans on to hot and sweat it out).

I got out the car when it was about 3/4 temp on the guage and the fan wasn't running. I can't spin it with my hands either (I checked when the car was cold ;) not going to risk cutting my fingers off!) - is this normal?

Where is the fuse for the rad?

Cheers,
Neil

How can I check whether my head gasket has gone? I'm getting all paranoid about this now as I've read when the temp goes high that will cause it to go?

Cheers

losing high ammounts of coolant

mayonase lookin **** in the oil filler cap

lots of smoke in engine bay

Ok, any idea which fuse in the engine bay is the one for the engine fan?

looked in haynes its bottom left but dunno which way it is turned. its 30 amps though

Doesnt look like any fuses have blown. It might be the relay but chances are it is the thermostat. How easy/expensive are these to replace?

No i've not replaced the fan yet, but I can actually spin it by hand. It's a little stiff but seems more free now, I assume it's not worked for a while.

Tomorrow I'm going to put a multimeter on the fan power leads and see if the relay is trying to start it up. If not then assume it's the thermostat.

its most probably the thermostat these are very common to break i dont think they cost much and are suppososed to be easy to change

thermostat.. you mean the fan switch right not the actual engine thermostat?

to test the fan switch, unplug it and short out the two connections. the fan should spin.

although if the fan isn't very free spinning, chances are its knackered. as custard said - test it by running power directly too it.

the fan fuse on the sei is behind the battery, its quite a beefy fuese. check for any more hidden fuses around the bay :)

thats my oppinion i hate workin on cars

as an example today took space saver wheel off to put alloy back on

jacked up took off wheel turned to put it down turn back car is moving jack slips n down it goes left resing on 3 weels and a disk ended up phoneing a mate with a trolly jack and jacking up on the suspension

Yeah I found the fuse and it's fine.

Quick question - how long should it take for the car to warm up? Mine gets to mid temperate within a minute or so and will stay there unless I'm sat in traffic when it starts to creep up.

I've read people talking about air locks in the system, how can I check to see if this has happened to mine? The car was "serviced" by the guy I bought the car off before I had it. The coolant level looks like its up to the max (if not a little over but I was parked sloping downhill so it might have been that).

The water was hot in the top up container and hissed when I took the lid off (carefully!). This was after a 4 mile drive home from work at 30mph. Normal?

Thanks all

Hi Neil, I had the same last week. Mine was the thermostat. As i no nothing about cars i took it to the garage. It cost around £30 to get it done and it's also worth getting them to check the fan.

W 2000 1.2 16v ELX

It's still overheating with no sign of the fan kicking in. I've checked the fuse and relay under the black box by the battery but it still doesn't work.

What actually switches the fan on and off? Where is the sensor that makes the relay kick in?

Cheers
Neil
