can anybody help me solve this problem? It has only just started happening, and i can hear it inside the car, but when i had my window down the other day it was really quite a loud noise outside. it only happens when i first use it for about 1st 5 mins. it normally happens when ive changed up a gear and only happens for a few seconds at a time. sounds like it is coming from beneath the car. grateful for any help.

I've got the same problem with my sporting. It's already been looked at and they said they couldn't identify the problem. It gets worse with the cold weather.

Mine goes back in on Wed, I'll let you know if I find out what it is!

My mum's Mk1 55s did this, and it turned out to be a rusted (therefore loose ) heatshield somewhere on the exhaust. Rip it off with some shears (like a mechanic did to my mum's car) and the problem will go away forever.

Same here. Fiat said it was my exhaiust sitting too close to the car and they appparently adjusted yesterday but its still there!! Grrrr :(

According to haynes it is the trust velocity joint.

I found out that Peuguot (sp) srdt have the exact same noise on the exact same gears and rpm. I know who changed the part (forgot what it was) but I remember that is way too expensive.

On mine I found out that if you move the throttle plate by hand from under the hood and then release it it will do the same noise.
