My v reg 1999 fiat punto selector squeals when braking or turning corners, the squealing comes from the front drivers side wheel ,when i drive in slow moving traffic or brake it REALLY SQUEALS. 2 mechanic said its probably my automatic gearbox which i should replace,can this be so?.What signs do i need to know it is my automatic gearbox?. My car drives perfectly no other faults, no warning lights shows.This is a very low mileage car. Brake pads have been replaced by ATS Brake specialists,exhausts and water pump has also been replaced still no luck, Anyone out there with some advice PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

You really need to narrow down the area from where the noise is coming from.Might be worth putting into dealer...yes I know ££££££....but what else can you do,hope it goes away?
Are the brake shield covers rubbing the discs? I'd get it up on a proper ramp and investigate before anything else.

Yes, I agree check the back of the disks for the shield plate rubbing and check the fan belt, sounds strange and maybe obvious but try it anyway

I took your advice, unfortunatly for me on the way to Fiat dealers car broke down at traffic lights IN FRONT OF A DOUBLE DECKER BUS!!!!!!. Reved it up and it jerked its way off the main road,lucky for me.R.A.C said the problem is either gearbox and powder clutch or just powder clutch,lucky for me there happen to be a fiat specialist round the corner they quoted me £500 or under for the job, they reckon it is a powder clutch problem,have,nt got car back yet.Will tell you more once i,ve got it back. It seems to me that when a car is giving problems even the garages cannot be sure of what the problem is until the damn thing has completely broken down. What i would now like to know is ,is it worth me keeping this car , (1) will the new powder clutch break again. (2)Should i change the way i drive to make the new clutch last longer?. I.ve driven this car for 4 YEARS without any problems, is this a sign of further problems ahead?

Oh dear.....unlucky!

4 years no problems....well had a good run for your money I guess,however £500 seems very steep,didn't realise it was a selector!

hi im having exactly the same problem with my 1999 n reg punto auto especially when reversing each day gets worse iv been told it sounds like the gear box going but its only done 27 thousand miles! its had new break pads. im really scared as it keeps jolting and squeeking its my first car and only owned since feb. the previous owners where the second owners and hardly used it as where elderly. took it back to the mechanic i bought it from (friend of the family very honest) couldnt find anything wrong never made a sound typical! im a nervouse wreck as im not in the position to buy a new car dont know what to do please help! hope you sorted your car out i really need mine as its the holidays and four kids to amuse! xx:bang:
