gonna sort out the coolant this weekend, and want to know what is the best coolant to use? also what is the capacity of the coolant tank so I can get the mix correct.

if you got 1.2 8v its 4.2 litres
1.2 16v = 4.5l
1.8 = 6l

they say best coolant to use is red, it supposedly lasts for 5 years

Red is the done thing now tbh
Why? because it lasts 5 years

Usually you mix most coolants in a 50/50 ratio

However - i'd fill the system up with water first and drop that to ensure you are flushing most of the old stuff out

Upon saying that - you will then have just water in pockets that sit around

So if you say buy the concentrated stuff, i tend to chuck about 1L in neat, then mix rest up

comes to 61,9% antifreeze / 38,1% water ratio

You want it the other way round. More than 50% anti freeze is a waste of time (unless you live in Iceland) and arguably reduces cooling efficiency. 50/50 is as high as you need to go.

Comma G30 I've found to be the best, and about £7 a litre buy a couple of litres and a 5 litre barrel of deionised water for about £2 and you won't need anything else

Coolant will get trapped so official capacities don't mean a lot you'll drain the system and only get about 2.5-3 litres in before its full again

Also if you buy a 3rd bottle of coolant you can keep it in the shed for top ups

2,1 l of antifreeze mixed with 1,1 l of water makes 50/50 mixture if we take in to account that 1l of water is trapped inside engine

I got one of these off the market for £1. It's dead handy to syphon out all the coolant without disconnecting anything.

Who really knows what's left in the waterworks?

Anyroadup -- 50/50 ish is fine. generally 66/34 would be hunky dory for those living south of Glasgow, west of Hull unless we're due a very cold winter.

This is what you need.
Pre mix it with distilled water 50/50, and you'll be fine the next 5-6 years.

Btw, any Fiat or Alfa dealer should have 1 liter bottles Paraflu U(ltra) P(rotection) in stock at about the same price...

Old thread but worth adding.

Drain old coolant.

Fill and empty twice with clean water to flush old coolant.
Add 2.5 litres of neat concentrate

Top up with water.

If you use premix, water trapped in the system will cause a weak mixture in the engine.

Run engine with heater hose bleed screw open to clear bubbles. Close the bleed screw.


Bleed again when engine is at running temperature. Top up as necessary.

I used pink no problems , you need to apply pressure at filler neck and bleed both screws one at a time , any gurgling on startup not going to kill it once heater gets good and hot but as days go on give a little bleed here and there to get rid of it , can be a pain to bleed properly/ you can blow and reach screw at same time or use bottle or funnel and get filler bottle on a higher level to rear bleed screw
