General break pad change

General break pad change

My dad once took my wheels off my old 55SX to show me the brake pads. (I'm only 21) Looked pretty simple to remove pads and replace.

Not sure if there is any lining up you have to do? Not sure how difficult it would be on a 2001 sporting.

:p

Disc/pad changes are not normally too difficult... I've done a few in the past on VWs - it generally tends to be the drums/shoes that are more difficult.

But I'd recommend that with all safety aspects of your car (brakes being one of them) either have someone whos done a change before with you for advice (if you decide to takle them yourself) or pay someone to do them & watch/ask for tips for the next time...

The hardest bit to do is to push the pistons back into the bores, to allow you to get the pads in (as they push out over time as old pads wear). ON our big audis the brakes are so heavily over assisted that there is a special hyrdoulic tool to do this (which only audi and some other garages have), and we couldn't get one so had to improvise with a steering wheel lock, and two borrowed neighbours (to hold one end of the bar, and the other by us two.

Fiats been smaller cars are much easier, you can do it with a flat screwdriver, and some heaving.

really easy, get yourself a G CLAMP to compress the piston and off you go. should take you about 30-40 mins to do both sides

Teulk beat me to it.

G clamps work. Just ensure you keep an eye on your brake fluid level when you compress the pistons (remove the resevoir cap). Make sure it doesn't spill out onto your paintwork as it'll fizz to bare metal..
