Hi,

I'm new on here, having joined to help me keep my daughter's 2001 1.2 Punto up together.

The car has 70,000 miles and is largely fine. However it has developed an intermittent PAS snag - it's fine sometimes, not others. The battery checks out ok and the alternator is charging - though the latter does shriek periodically. I will probably change the alternator next job.

It also runs erratically at idle speed - all by itself the idle speed increases to about 1,500 RPM (no tacho so guessing) then drops down again, then up again and so it continues.

I don't expect the PAS and erratic idling to be linked - unless any of you experienced guys on here can say otherwise. Any help, suggestions, pointers etc gratefully received.

Thanks and regards

Andy H

Unlikely to be linked. Hunting idle is often a dirty Idle Air Control. It's in the throttle body -- sometimes it can be removed and cleaned, else remove and clean the whole throttle body with carb cleaner.

For the alternator, you should get 12.6v from a good battery, fully charged, engine off, something in the order of 14.4v from the alternator (engine running) measured across the battery terminals.

If the squeak is from the belt, just replace the belt. If it's from the alternator, check it out -- it'll require at least new bearings.

as said
belt needs changing
throttle body needs removing and tipping up and cleaning of idle control valve
then test with fiat ecuscan under actuations
once seen to clearly move in and out twice replace on manifold taking care to replace o ring in position

or change throttle body for known good one (warning they stick once put on shelves of sheds garages or scrapyard sales areas so one from a car not just scrapped yesterday may have a propensity to be no better)

Thank you fellas.

Flisko - couldn't get that link you sent me to open...? IT frustrates the ass off me sometimes.

Used a basic OBD reader on the car - no stored fault codes, which surprised me somewhat. Whipping the alternator off it later to check it and the belt - although the belt looks pretty fresh.

With the PAS - reading the many threads on here, changing the whole column seems to be the most common approach. Is there any intel on this, compatibility issues etc - any guidance/tips gratefully received.

Best regards

Until the belt screech is sorted I wouldn't be thinking about replacement columns. The most frequent p/s glitch is undervoltage especially if it mainly happens when parking or unparking.
After that it can be fixed by replacing the onboard relays or the motor itself depending on the age of the car. Used columns are a risk but there are a number of companys repairing them for approx £160.

Thank you fellas.
