Hi all, Ive seen a k&n panel filter for my 1.2 8v. Has anyone tried it or know of it? Would like to know if it could make the car a tad more nippy.

Hi mate,

A "tad" as in a tadpoles whisker faster! As Fingers say they are washable and re-oilable though so can be re-used come service time.

They are proven to have slightly better airflow than a lot of standard paper filters, but at the end of the day, it will be a minimal difference at the wheels.

Better than a K&N induction kit bolted on the throttle body though (y). Still £50 isnt cheap!

I think I paid £6 for my grande air filter the other week so £50 for one air filter would buy me 8 years of paper filters (technically just over) and as previously mentioned the gains are negligible

can someone give me a link to that induction kit, and is it a simple fit or does it require modifications and extra parts?

many thanks

its an easy kit to fit, just need to jiggle about to get the right fit so filter doesn't sit too high and hit under side of bonnet when closed. make sure you leave the black rubber seal on the throttle body and fit the blue elbow over that, i made a support bracket out of an accessory strap bend round the pipe and bolted to the original air filter box mounting bolt, some people bolt it to the battery box strap but i thought the engine movement would shear it eventually, my way allows the whole thing to move with the engine. haven't noticed any improvements in performance but looks and sounds cool
good luck

A new paper filter flows more air than a K&N ( or derivate) at any moment.
So if it's performance you're after, just change the inexpensive original paper filter more often...

(Remember, K&N was invented years ago to keep dust and sand from big V-8 engines with 4 barrel carbs, racing around in deserts in North and South America..)

oh wow! for £27.99 that has to be done! thanks so much!

I fitted it for cosmetic reasons and never expected to be driving off to Santa pod to compete with dragsters lol but it does sound great and always raises an eyebrow when I open the bonnet in front of friends!
Certainly looks better than a big black plastic air box in my opinion ;-)

An cone shape ( K&N) filter in the enginebay, will suck in hot air coming from the engine, and will decrease horsepower a lot.
(More noise and less HP....!!)

Peter I disagree, potentially yes when the car is sat idling, lights etc the air temp will rise but once the car is in motion and air is circulating I would be surprised if there was any noticeable heat in the engine bay let alone enough to affect the air intake temp, given the vacuum effect of air flow passing underneath the engine bay drawing out heat from engine components.
Then again I'm no scientist and could be completely wrong?
I know that after a lengthy drive I have opened the bonnet and the aluminium intake pipe which runs across the top of the engine is cold to the touch, indicating it has been sucking in cold air and not hot.

Yes, you're wrong I'm afraid, it gets VERY hot under the bonnet....
Al the hot air coming from the radiator flows straight into the enginebay, and there it meets the hot engine...
That's the reason the original airbox sucks air in from outside the enginebay.

(Btw, it's a good habit to open the bonnet after a hard ride, to let the engine cool down quicker...injectors don't like heat for a long time, and with all the (noise) insulation in todays cars, it keeps the enginebay hot for a long time, even after shutting down the engine).
