Good afternoon all,

Since 2 days our Punto has been having problems. It is a standard 2002
model with a 1.2 engine, nothing special.

My mum had been complaining about a symbol lighting up in the dashboard. This morning she called me up telling me the car stopped working (temporarily).

Later today I took the car for a ride to see what the problem was and noticed the following;
The car started flawlessly, no problems here. Put it in its first gear and started riding. After 30 to 40 seconds the car started dropping in RPM. The standard RPM value while NOT giving gas is 1000; this time however it started fluctuating below 1000 rpm. The car lost its traction force and every time I
stepped on the gas pedal the RPM would NOT rise so the car would NOT
ride any faster. In contrary, the car actually dropped in RPM so harshly that it
eventually failed and the engine stopped working.

The sound that the engine makes when I step on the gas pedal can be
compared with the sound that a scoot mobile makes (these 45 km/h cars
that oldies drive ; http://www.eengoedhulpmiddel.nl/uploads/items/55/kl Canta del sol schuinvoor1.JPG )

It has this low frequency ticking noise to it and puffs (like when there is a hole in the exhaust and the you hear this heavy puff noise).

At the same time the engine management symbol lights up. After the car
shutdown it hard a fairly hard time starting again, but after it did start the
problem would be gone for another minute.

Things that I know for sure -

- It is not related to the engine being unable to
deliver the required traction force (because I stepped on the clutch pedal,
then gave gas and the problem would still occur).

-The amount of RPM doesn't rise any higher than 1200-1400 before dropping
back again.

- It doesn't only occur at acceleration from 0, rather also when I was riding
around whilst testing it (a speed of roughly 30 km/h)

- I would almost say that the engine isn't getting any fuel at that very
moment because stepping on the gas pedal, as far as it reaches, did not
have any effect. That might be where the problem is at?

-Again, there is this loud ticking noise coming from the engine that becomes
louder as more gas is being given until the engine faints.

Any help and effort is greatly appreciated! If any of you has an idea of what
it could be I'd be really glad! Please help me out with this as I rather like to
fix my own car instead of taking it directly to the garage. If we can't come up
with a solution here I will take it tomorrow to the garage and get the error code read out.

Thanks in advance, much love.

Gökhan.

hi gokhan91 read the fault codes to point you in the direction of fault
this is why they are stored
at first i thought you had a broken exhaust but i now feel your car is overfueling rather than underfueling
without a basic code read and or a proper inspection and a reading of the co gases it would be akin to sticking pins in a doll to give you any further help

come back when codes read at least

when i had this symptom on my car it was cuz of bad ecu, running on 2 cylinders and without power
