Hi Guys,
I own a PUNTO HATCHBACK 1.2 16v Sporting Speedgear 3dr Auto 2001 model and have recently started have issues with with speedometer not working. Looking through these forums a lot of responses seem to be pointing towards a faulty speedo sensor. I was just wondering if anyone could direct me as to where I might find this on my car, can it be found by opening the bonnet or do I have to go underneath the car, and is it a simple task in removing it or do you have to have some knowledge and skills as to what you are doing?

if no ABS then it will have sensor on gearbox located behind Diff,
if no ABS gearbox will just have a Blank no sensor,

5 speed or six speed box ?

Any idea on as to why the speedometer isn't working then, strange thing is the mileage is still increasing and I have read a lot of people saying that this shouldn't be the case if the speedo isn't functioning correctly

Homeward owns a rev'n' go punto he might know, :)

I always thought it was from the ABS, too -- but, somewhere, I think dave may have mentioned that the Speedgear 'box has a separate sensor....

Sorry to pass the buck: but dave...? :worship:

PS: Found it...! I have the memory (and figure) of an elephant...! (y)

Hi,

The Speedgear has 2 different speed sensors on the box. One for the main pulley and one for the lay pulley.

Is the gearbox changing up and down ok as it should? Normally if one of these sensors if iffy you will have issue with it changing up and or down.

What exactly is the issue your having? Does the speedo not work at all? is it intermittent? Does it not read over a certain Mph?

Any warning lights on dash?

Alan

Hi a1ant,
This first started a couple of days back when the speedometer seemed intermittent, it would increase with the speed but then kept dropping to a lower speed than which I knew I was travelling at.
On my way to work on Thursday it wasn't working at all but on the way home it appeared to be working as it should.
And since yesterday it hasn't been working at all, kind of sits on 0mph but you can see the needle flicking as if it wants to start moving.
The gearbox seems to be shifting through gears fine and there are no warning lights illuminated on the dash.

No unfortunately I don't have access to any sort of diagnostic software

I ended up taking it to a local Fiat specialist and it turned out to be a fault on the instrument cluster, luckily he was currently breaking down another Punto Speedgear to sell for parts so it wasn't an extortionate price to replace.
Does anyone know how much a replacement instrument cluster would have cost if it was new?

dont even talk about new original parts as they sometimes cost almost more than whole car is worth
