hi just brought a mk2 punto 1.2 8v (2001) starts up first time but whilst in drive it cut out, first time it started straight back up but after another couple of mins whilst carrying on driving it cuts out again and wouldnt start for at least 10 mins?

could someone please help and what should i check first to try and pinpoint the fault?

im awaiting for the car to be deliverd today, thanks

It sounds like the crank sensor ( aka too dead centre) has started to break down

It gets warn and stops providing the critical signal needed
It cools and works again temporarily till it gets toi warm

Its a diy change as well
1x 10mm bolt
1 cabke fitted into casing
1 quick fit connector and done

:)

On the crank alternator pulley, at approx 3'o'clock you'll see the TDC sensor.

The standard test for a duff sensor (at least, one that's failing intermittently) is, when it has conked, check for wet smelly of petrol plug, and no spark (both with cranking). If neither, 95% + it's TDC sensor. If either, it ain't.

and if you need to buy one get one from local autofactors like andrew page partco etc
NOt poundland internet sites as you will buy a rubbish copy

hi again i had a mechanic look at the car and do a diagnostic test but no codes come up? could this be right? also i had other issus like the power steering not working and he put it down to the battery being half dead,, i charged up the battery then started the car and pas started to work,, it wouldnt start straight away as the connection to the crankshaft sensor seems to be dodgy (when i wiggle it it makes a clicking noise near the battery) but now the car wont start at all,, it cranks and sounds like it fires but dont complety start,, just keeps trying to spark by the sound of it but then gives up? any ideas?

happening to me and it was the crank sensor wire was faulty i wiggle to wire of the crank sensor while the car was running and the engine would cut out :) steering wasnt working like yours and when replaced the sensor the power steering worked after :)

It's very rare for the TDC (aka crank) sensor to generate fault codes. It's the sensor that tells the ECU that the engine is turning over -- the ECU thinks that if the engine is not turning over, there can be no faults. Such is life.

Did you try pulling a sparkplug (after cranking -- see post)?
thanks for the reply i will try them all tomorow and post back with results, cheers
