Hi all, thanks for taking the time to read my thread

Driving to my parents today, took a right and a couple seconds later (no sound heard) car slowed down to a halt. Car will go into gears fine, with clutch down and without (still friction when changing gears regardless of clutch position) now car has no drive whatsoever. Revs go up and car barely crawls forward (not at a driveable speed) had to get towed to my parents. Can anyone help? My gear link cable was changed around 6 months ago and my first thought was that but both are fine.

Read about on this forum and common answers seem to be the clutch is gone or gearbox but would like info on how to distinguish between both. Hate being fleeced by garages!

Why does this always happen at the worst possible time ?

Thanks in advance.

If the car will go into gear regardless of clutch pedal position, that is almost certainly the clutch, or at least parts of the clutch control system. Get a friend to press the clutch pedal while you peer at the top of the gearbox looking for any movement in the linkage. If the movement is fine, the gearbox will have to come off for further investigation.

Movement is fine. If clutch has to be replaced is there anything worthwhile changing in gearbox whilst it's off?

if your having the work done in a garage get them to replace the lower engine mount dog bone, handthem a new mount to fit rather than them putting old one back on..they shouidnt charge for this as it will be more than likely be removed anyway.

get a LUK clutch kit ;)

Before all this work is carried out,

tbh id have the car up on axle stands..and run it off the ground.

ive seen cars in the past with chewed splines on drive shaft/s or a popped drive shaft due to worn out/failed banshacked engine mount.

so id always check first. you never knows.

^...........

Yea as always investigate before condeming

But this is an internet diagnosis, we can do all the checks, we have to decide based on what the OP has said

A simple cup popping out could have done it :)
A worn or dead CV?
Diff let go?
slave cylinder has popped?

Alot of question that a quick visual may condem for us

ziggy
