new to this forum....my punto developed problems last night and the recovery guys said it had to do with the water pump. The was barely water left in the radiator and was a tapping sound as i drove till i finally came to a halt.tried filling it with water this morning and it all leaked out from close to the belt. is this a major problem?

Water pump is easy enough. There's a core plug in much the same place (they'll be saying "water pump" because of the location) under the belt cover, so take a good peek at that, too.

Both are DIYable without too much hassle on the 8v cars. If removing the timing belt, best fit a new one and tensioner.

All this assumes that running it out of water has not caused further damage.

started the car today and it was revving very high....is this a bad or very bad sign????

got it checked....head gasket is gone........
HG has gone means that water channel thats gone is full of air
More air in entering the Combustion chamber then it should be

as a result - the mixture is lean = It rev's

The HG has failed because of the leak, the leak has allowed the overheat, which has then warped the head

Fix the fault before boiling another head again

thanks Ziggy, told i need to get another engine.... and to say i had only done 48500 on the clock....how much would it normally cost to get and fix another 2nd hand engine

I doubt if they can actually conclude that without pulling the head.

Still, if you're going to pay someone to do it, you're looking at £100 - £200 for a "new" engine, £100 - £150 to fit it, and may as well have a new clutch while you're at it.

All this stuff is easy enough DIY. The lesson is, old cheap cars are only cheap if you do most of the work yourself.
