Recently changed the cambelt and head gasket on my 1.2 8v. Apart from overheating before it ran ok. After putting it back together the car has been running a bit lumpy. Starts and drives ok, but idles is a bit off and there seems to be a lack of power. it cruises fine just seems to take extra effort to get there.

Am not loosing any coolant or oil, and the temp gauge is rock steady. Also had the head skimmed and cleaned while it was off.

Is it possible the timing is slightly out? Is it possible to check the timing without removing the engine mounts etc?

Timing is suspect here
But good chance is that the ignition system is too

A HG failure can kill spark plugs - so i'd advise a Plug and HT change along with a set timing checks :)

I was going to try the plugs and leads as well, they were brand new about 12 months ago.

Going to try runn ing the engine in the dark and having a good look around the engine bay, the leads aren't the easiest to fit properly! Will take myself of to halfords with my trade card to get new plugs and leads.

If this doesn't improve things, is there a way of checking the timing without taking everything to bits again?

its not something i can say i;ve tried

But i believe you can check the top cam timing with cover off
but the crank - im not so sure, i think its minimum gotta have wheel off and crank pulley for aux off as well

Thought as much!! Fingers crossed the new plugs and leads will do the trick.

Ok. Checked for sparking last night running the engine in the dark. No signs of any issues. Am going to try and collect some plugs and leads later today to try. A colleague at work has suggested the Lambda sensor maybe faulty after the HG issue! Anybody any experience of this? I would expect a fault code, but he seems to think that you won't always get a fault as the sensor doesn't realise it's knackered!
