Technical Fan Heater turns lights on!

Hi, I have the Punto 1.2 Sport (2002). On the way home from work today I had the fan heater on 2 and turned it up to 4. The fan went off and did not operate again. When I got home I tried it again and the 'lights' symbol lit up on the dashboard. On checking the external lights it would appear that the side lights were coming on by turning the fan heater on (fan still not working). The main lights appear to be working fine by operating the normal light on/off switch. Has anyone got any ideas what the problem is please?

Thanks for the link Ziggy. Please excuse my ignorance but is this any kind of single electrical wire that can be used to bridge the gap?
