Help! The cam belt has just snapped on my punto mk2, how easy is it to replace the belt now it's snapped?

The breaking of the cambelt would not cause any damage to anything else :)

You should replace the cambelt, water pump, and tensioner all at the same time. the whole kit should not be any more than 40-50 pounds at most on ebay.

You may be able to do it yourself, especially if you have previously done things to your engine before.

Yep it's a 8valve, what other damage would there be?
should be fine, mine went while just setting off at a junction, rang the rac to get recovered and told them belt had gone, and a cocky so and so said "so what makes you think the timing belt has gone " my reply was " cos i have got it in my fecking hand".
they just go without warning, if your car has done a few miles then replace water pump as well is a option but def belt and tensioner. you dont need to take pump off to do it but if pump goes later will have to take timing belt off to get at it

Thanks for the info, how do you set the timing up?
And what's a safe engine?

hi dave
difficult to set this engine up when belt gone as marks arent straight forward
i use a pointer down the spark plug hole and have crank at about quarter past 12
safe engine means valves dont hit pistons so cheap easy fix
buy a haynes if doing it yourself and post up your area in case one of us feels ulsatronic and wants to help you up your drive:)

picture here.

just get crank timed up from there. ??

or am I talking B/s as normal ?

only posted pic as general guide at no point did imention cutting belt.

your pictures mint
timing through the bunga bunga hole is for mk1 as far as i know as the marks are basically meaningless unless someone cares to enlighten us
i mentioned cutting belt purely as an anecdote to saying its hard to get belt aligned if you dont have a belt to go by

you dont talk bs i have that badge and proud but hey no one reads my posts anyway look at the thanks we get if unsure

im waiting for that day myself - and i cant wait to say that phrase myself!

Since its an 8v, im waiting for mine to die, why replace it when its not much of an inconvience to sort really

I'd like to say i could have the belt out and belt on within 2 hrs
But longer is coolant pump been changed...
