Hi everyone, apologies if the solution to my problem is already located elsewhere. Oh and I know nothing really about cars, so excuse me if I seem ignorant at any stage or am missing something. I'm just learning now.

Em so anyway, I have a 2000 mk2/a Punto, the 16v sporting (love it to bits, owned for just about a month/first car).

I can't get it to connect to the ECU with Torque, and loads of other apps and/or software and I'm using a little elm327 bluetooth adapter :bang:.

Based on what everybody has said in my searches over the past two weeks, it's just not possible on those puntos :bang:, as obd2 was not fully implemented until
2001 for petrol cars in the EU, or 2004 for diesels, but OBD2 does go back as far as 1996 .

But I do have and OBD2 shaped diagnostics port, my adapter fits and receives power, and I did kinda get it to work with one app, called AlfaOBD. I used the
demo, as it's free, the full version is €37.76, and I've already paid for Torque and other stuff so I'm broke really lol :(. So anyway, with Alfa OBD, I selected Fiat, then Punto 188, then what I wanted to access, (Instrument panel).

The app read from my ECU my:

The app also let me monitor some live data. I specifically checked engine speed (RPM) and water temperature and some other stuff. I revved the car a bit and it responded very well matching my rev meter and giving me a live reading on my screen (y).

The app also let me clear a fault from the system I was currently using, the code was U1601, I presume because I tried to start it with a cut key I have, so I cleared that.

My issue, is that while this app seems to connect very easily and seamlessly, every other app I've tried, won't connect to the ecu. I see in Torque, there's a Fiat section in protocols that I can't select because it's not made, and I really want to be able to use Torque and other obd2 apps I've bought, as AlfaOBD, while it works, is clunky and counter intuitive at times and it does not do everything I want :(. Also, Torque is very clean and easy to use, and the fault scanner is just the way I want it :D.

So is this just a matter of finding my specific protocol and asking the appmakers to add it into their apps , because if AlfaOBD is connecting to my car which supposedly doesnt have obd2 but seems to have it, then that leads me to thinking it has obd2  .

:worship: If anybody can help me out, then they shall be perceived , "as a GOD" lol. :worship:

What ECU do you have?

IAW Scan 2:
The main goal of this project was to create a complete diagnostic solution, comparable to factory tester, for the Magneti-Marelli IAW-6F/8F/16F/18F/18FD ECU based cars. Recently also support for the IAW-04K (P8) and IAW-1G7 have been introduced.

MES.

IAW Scan 2 is free, there is a trial version of MES (which is partially crippled).

Em, no idea what ECU I have, I'm downloading IAW scan 2 now, and I have the trial of MES, but haven't gotten it to connect yet. I'll be trying later on and I'll let you know what I find out.

Thanks for the help.

To use AlfaOBD do you need to know your car's Key Code?

I just bought a Bluetooth Dongle but it seems my year 2000 MK2 Punto came out 1 year before OBDII became standard in Europe, so AlfaOBD might be the only software that can read anything off my car's computer.

My daughter sold her Punto more than a year ago(for a 500 TwinAir) so I have no direct experience of using Torque with that but I do have a 2001 Volvo XC70 Turbo and I can use Torque with that BUT I cannot do more than diagnostics. I think the problem you have is that Fiat (like Volvo) use non-standard OBD codes (Volvo terms them differently) and they are specific to faults found after diagnostic tests run by the car's modules over the CAN bus. Torque only finds generic codes. So, as another post suggested on here, there is just an outside chance that, provided you know the model number/serial number of the ECM/ECU then you can use Alfa diagnostics if you have the security codes to override protected mode. On the Volvo only Volvo Vida and DiCE running on Microsoft Windows will run full diagnostics or allow certain owner programmable function options to be changed eg. the interior rear view non-dazzle mirror can have 3 different tint settings specified, or the Day Running Lights can be programmed to 3 different modes.
Back to Fiat I did a lot of work on the Punto, a full rebuild of the engine etc and for this I accessed the car on a Windows 7 laptop running XP mode. I found it very hit and miss and terribly frustrating, even more than using Volvo Vida (and that's saying something) so I humbly submit that you find someone who lives within travelling distance of you and is prepared to help by bringing his scanner and helping you with whatever you are attempting. Well worth a few beers and it will save a lot of heartache and frustration!
