Hi, I'm not great with cars so was hoping that I could get some ideas from here. I have a Y reg Punto and while changing a bulb noticed a small patch of oil on the floor, and then that it was covering a fair area of the engine. I have no idea what it could be but would rather have a go at sorting it myself or at least know what im roughly dealing before taking it to a garage. I have attached some photos, I cant see that it is coming from anywhere specifically such as a pipe but it seems to be on the lower half of the engine and to the right (As i'm looking at it).

Thanks!

Carl

looks like rocker cover needs replacing.

nice cheap easy fix if so

I'm sure he means just the gasket.

Remove the big black box, which is the air intake box.
Under it, the top cover on the engine is held by (I think) 4 small bolts. Undo these, lift off the cover, remove gasket. Wipe all surfaces clean, carefully fit a new gasket and replace the cover.

Get a new gasket before you start work.
Clean the engine carefully with degreaser, (Gunk, Jizer, etc.). Take care not to get any onto any electrics, and especially not any rinsing water. When clean you'll be able to see if it is cured, or if not, exactly where the leak is. Leaks usually come from the highest point.

As above.

Rocker cover gasket and/or coil pack O ring. Both are cheap as chips.

Trick for the rocker cover gasket is:

Clean scrupulously -- acetone, meths, panel wipe, etc as solvent. Use a little gasket goo. Do not overtighten the bolts (should be just a little more than finger tight).

Check that the crankcase breather isn't blocked.

Lots of stuff here on it.

Thanks for the replies they are really helpful!

I've had a read through the forum guides too and think it seems straight forward enough so have just ordered the part to have a go at changing it myself.

I'll let you know!

I had to do this a little while ago, was my first time doing something under the bonnet so its not too hard (y)
although I just removed the old, wiped the surfaces down with my fingers and then put the new one one...

by the way I think one of the rocket cover bolts are under the oil filler cap, and another (I think) is slightly behind + lower than that, holding the timing cover to the rocker cover.

Thank you! Part is due to come tomorrow so will have a go then.

I changed it and it was easy but it looks like some is still coming through so i'm going to have to open it up and look again... maybe I didn't tighten it enough or something?

Never works properly the first time like your first girlfriend when you try to........ bake a cake;) What did you think I was going to say.

More likely didn't clean enough or use enough sealant (it's wise to let the sealant go off before a final tweak.

But overtightening will always, always, lead to a leak.

Do check where it's coming from -- the coil pack O ring is the other likely source.

And a blocked breather (dunk in degreaser for half an hour and wash through under the tap) a likely cause.

looking underbonnet
theres a lump of metal sticking out on the right side of the engine
if it has oil on it
then its usually the failed o ring on the coil pack causing it
