Hi,

I have a Y reg Punto and for the past few months have been having trouble turning the key in the ignition. It won't turn at all and then after some wiggling around it turns fine but sometimes takes longer than others. As I only have the one key, a blue one, I went to a locksmiths who said I would have to go to a main dealers for key related issues and probably pay £100+ to get a new one cut... That was enough to put me off looking again!

Over the past week my key has also had trouble opening the drivers door so I am getting a bit worried that I won't be able to get into or start the car at all if I leave it any longer. Vospers say that they will charge £45 just to look at it as I don't know what the problem is so I was hoping someone had an idea/solution?

Thanks

Carl

try a good squirt of wd40, cured mine a few years ago:worship:WD40

Hi cdt, look here for my definitive cure to worn punto ignition barrels always around 60,000 miles too,Ive done loads now,the art is to keep taking a tumbler and spring out then seeing if barrel turns freely, this way key wont come out when ignition on but if its really worn take them all out, no one can nick your car because they cant beat the immobilisor without your key with the chip in it.

with regards worn door lock if you have central locking then just fit an ebay chinese remote central locking module for £10 and an hours work for a novice

Thanks for the replies.

I will give the WD40 a try and then see from there. Seeing as its the door and ignition and it's only done 48000 miles i'm not sure about the wear but we shall see. And thanks for the key guide atom0007.

I will keep you posted.

Cheers I hadn't thought of this.

Hi mate,

Seeing as the problem is with both the ignition and the door lock, I would go with atom and suggest that it may well be the key. Check that its not slightly bent. The blade bends fairly easily (if you sit on your keys for example) and even a very slight curve will put it out of alignment.

If it is bent, be very careful when bending it back as it may snap if you go too crazy too quickly. I usually squash them back in the vice but carefully/ slowly.

Thank again for the replies.

The WD40 seems to have helped with the door but the ignition still isn't great. Also the key is possibly a little bent too now you mention it so I think I will give the key swapping guide a go and see how I get on with that and hopefully save some money too!

Thank you!

Try another locksmith.
Get a none chipped key cut to code, not copied.
This new key will be same as out of the factory. No wear.

A good auto locksmith will have a cut to code machine. Timpsons wont.
