Hi there,

just wondering, would a HGT engine head fit onto a 1.2 block?

my yellow 1.2 keeps over heating and i think the head has gone again. i've got a HGT sitting on my drive which will be scrap soon, but the engine is good. I was thinking about swaping the heads over if it is possible and fixing the over heating issue on the 1.2.

I am also going to get a new thermostat and completely flush the coolant, but all i am after is if the head from the HGT is able to fit onto the 1.2?

Many thanks,
Carl.

No.

Completely and utterly different engine design.

Do a compression test on the 1.2 engine (cheap as chips compression tester on eBay).

If the issue is with the HG (it's very unlikely to be with the head itself) report back. On the 8v motors it's a very easy job, but the chances are that the HG has gone for a reason. You need to find it and fix that.

8v's overheat usually because

A - there is a water leak, lack of coolant
B - the thermostat has gotten stuck
C - The car is suffering from thermal stress (rev'd to much when cold)
D - The head wasn't skimmed again last HG, so its just consuming water
E - The water pump has failed, and tbh thats rare
F - There is a blockage

Ziggy

Do any of these apply since his is a 16v?

This has been said time and again.
It can be done, but hardly ever has it been done correctly before.
It is cheaper and less hassle just to get an HGT. If you swap the engine then you will need to set up the rest of the car accordingly. Brakes, gearbox etc. HGT was built for the 1.8 engine, sporting wasn't.

HGT:
Quite high insurance as standard.
Comes set up for the 1.8 engine power, braking all that.

Sporting with HGT engine:
Bigger engine than standard - insurance goes higher than normal HGT
Heavily Modified - insurance goes up even more

thanks for the replies.

HGT has lots of scratches, couple of dents ect.
Needs a full new exhaust system. (incl cat)
Needs new brakes (disks and Pads/ front and back)
Currently has no MOT so other problems may be spotted?

But the engine has only done 55k... However there is a slight oil leak which i cant find :( (cambelt side)

I am tempted just to swap all the mods from the 1.2 such as coilovers, abarth skirts alfa 147 gt seats ect into the HGT and get it MOT'd.

Then sell the parts that are not able to be swapped and scrap the shell...

OR

just completely sell everything i can from both cars, then scrap both shells and leave puntos forever lol...
