Hi All,

Have just joined forum, seems very comprehensive. Hoping for some help, I need to replace gear cables/ linkage due to a snapped cable, are they easy to do, i have had a quick look around site looking for a 'how to' guide on this subject but can't find one. I'd appreciate a link if one exists, thanks all

Hi and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Yes its a fairly straight forward process. The most difficult bit for the home mechanic would be access.

What engine do you have? as the procedure varies vary slightly, but essentially the gear selector cable pops off at the gearbox end, then you undo an inspection hatch from the underside of the car which is located directly below the gear stick, you pop the cable off from that end too, there is a spring clip to pull off at each end that locks the cable in, and then there is a retaining clip that holds the cables in position on the sub frame cross member. Undo this then simply drop the cable out.

to get access to the gearbox end, you simply remove the battery, undo the 3 bolts that secure the battery box and remove the battery box.

jonyid, yeah all done, simple really. Hardest job which was not difficult was removing the exhaust heatshield that runs along transmission tunnel. I split the exhaust at the front joint then it was easy enough. 4 bolts to undo under car and one inside to remove gear cable and lever block, have to undo/move centre console a bit to get at inside bolt. I ended up buying a complete second hand unit with both cables/lever/ housing off ebay for £36. I put front end of car up on a pair of ramps, access was quite good then and i am 6'6''! Good luck with doing it not worth paying garage.

Cheers mate I'm 6' 2 and was worried about the space, may have to get the axle stands out.

Any chance you could type a specific step by step guide? I'm taking the centre console off anyway to change some bulbs SK that won't matter

Once you get under car it's quite straightforward

Jack up car and support with stands or put on ramps
Split exhaust on front joint near flexi,(2 bolts) worth getting new sealing ring before reassrmbly, drop off the exhaust hanger and next one back.
Remove tunnel heatshield, 6 or 8 bolts.
Undo 4 bolts holding gearshift in place.
Remove/ move console around gearlever.
Undo bolt in front of gearlever.
Pop off 2 ball joints at gearbox end of cables, may be easier to remove battery/battery tray.

Reassembly is the reverse procedure, add some grease to ball joints before re-fitting.

Sit back, pop a tinny or 2 and smile thinking how much you have saved and how much you have learned.:):)

I may have forgotten something along the line as i did it weeks ago but it really is a piece of P**s...................
