Hi there,

I have a Fiat Punto HGT 1.8 16 V

It was misfiring so a garage replaced the temp valve as it was showing -35 in the fuel tank. That didn't solve it.

We then got a second hand ECU from ebay with all the locks etc and it is still misfiring. I really don't know what to do as I need to get the car working for work.

I'm going to get the coils replaced and see if its that but I have my doubts.

Any ideas?

I would be eternally grateful for any feedback

Hi mate and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

Do you have the Engine management light on on the dash? (Small orange engine shaped symbol)

What test did the garage do to determine the ECU was faulty?

Have they not tested the coils? I wouldnt replace all of them as it may only be one.

I presume by temp valve you mean the Coolant temperature sensor?

How bad is the misfire? How many cylinders does it sound like its firing on? Have the spark plugs been checked?

Sorry for all the questions but they will enable us to help you better! (y)

Hi there, no thank you for replying.

The ECU was sending out error codes when it wasn't the case.
And then it went on to say no errors.

The engine light was coming on sometimes when the car was starting but would go.

Im sure they tested the coils and were fine. Sorry to be vague but its been in 2 garages now and tomorrow I will verify.

Yeah it was the coolant temperature sensor that got replaced.

Its misfiring on 2 cylinders. Its quite bad as I drove down to Sussex from London, 100 miles and it nearly died on the motorway twice. Since then (a month) its been left down there but Im down trying to resolve it.
Its in a garage, but a small one and their baffled with it and its costing more and more.

Thanks

Hi,

Have any of the garages performed a compression test?

Is the EML still coming on with the new ECU?

I understand your situation, and therefore it may be difficult for you to answer a lot of these questions as you wont necessarily know what the garages HAVE done, but if you ask them when you speak to them and post the answers back it should give us more of a clue.

If you brought your car in to me, i would probably do the following....

Plug the car into Examiner and read any stored fault codes. Depending on the fault codes, check or replace what it believes the problem is... if the problem still persists...

Remove and test each of the coil packs

Remove and check each spark plug

Test wiring to each coil

Test each injector

Compression test.

Check timing.

Thank you for the reply.

I'll go to him in the morning and relay what you've said, and check whats been tested etc and get back.

Its a shame, its my 4th Punto and I love the cars but this is crippling me in an unfortunate time.

Thanks

Its always the way isnt it (n). The garages may have already done all of the things that Ive mentioned, but best to check. At least if we know that definitely HAVE checked each one we know to look elsewhere.
