Re: Mk2b punto coolant fan

Nope it is dead from the relay, will work from here,

Any idea where to go from no power to the relay?

Thanks
Adam

With the fuse in place the relay should always be powered.

If the hidden strip of metal inside the fusebox between the fuse and the relay is burnt out you will need to get a 50 amp inline fuse connected to the positive bolt on the fusebox and solder it to the relay and plug the relay back in.

Well, I swapped the fuse box around for one from the scrappy, cleaned all the cable connections, swapped the 30 amp and 50 amp maxi fuse.

I can feel the small red relay clicking, I have used some wire to bridge the red one nothing, tried the big black relay and this time the fan did kick in to life.
But the temp sensor is not showing anything on the gauge,

My next step is to nip out and get a new sensor,

Thanks, I found it after I asked, I have downloaded it and sent off for a cable.
Will see how it goes,

Cheers

Our fan stopped working a while back. Disconnecting the temperature sensor did nothing except increase the idle speed a bit. Bridging the two fan pins on the relay got the fan working.
The other two pins on the relay are the coil. One is live the other is the earth or trigger wire to the ecu. If you slip in a wire to that pin and ground it the fan should run. If not it may be that the trigger wire from the fusebox to the ecu has broken, It's a pale grey wire and ours had cracked in the middle of it's run just where it goes around the back of the battery box. You could also remove the ecu plug nearest the battery and check for continuity between the trigger pin on the fan relay and the grey wire at the ecu plug.

Well I was moving the car tonight it came up with engine fault and the fan kicked in. First time in 8 years I have ever heard it work.

If the temperature sensor goes open circuit the fan comes on, the idle speed increases slightly, engine light comes on and the overtemperature light, red one. This light goes out immediately if the circuit remakes but the yellow engine light stays on for three more cycles of the motor.

Yes. I have just left it running on the drive about 10 min or so the fan kicked in but it is not reading the temp any more. I have swapped over the temp sensor and still the same. Well it some time's reads the temp. Could my fault have been down to dodgy wiring from the sensor?

Its old thread, i am trying to switch on the fan all the time, because engine overheats, i bridged the green sensor wires, but fan works with engine OFF position, not on ON position

Hi Chali, Do you have a mk2/b punto?
If you don't and this is for your panda it may be better to start a new thread in the panda section.

Jack
