hi all this morning when i started the car i could hear a grinding noise like some thing was rubbing after about 15 mins of driving it stopped any ideas about what this could be, im a worrier and really worried that this is some thing serious thanks in advance

update: today started the car and the noise is now there all the time! it actually sounds like some thing is rattling around in there!!! some times the ratling stops and it makes a whining sound! i pulled over and popped the bonnet it is on the drivers side, i have just put oil in and its made no difference! im really scared now i havent long had this car i dont know alot about cars but i do know a rattling sound from the engine is bad!! any ideas please thanks

Hi.
Your best option is get someone to remove the alternator belt.
Then rotate the pulley on the alternator if that moves smoothly
Then go to next step, start the engine your safe to run the engine for a min or so
With the belt off..don't run it too long mind as the battery will soon go flat.

If the noise is evident with the belt off.. you will need someone to inspect the cam belt tensioner as a matter of urgency..

Forgot to ask, does your pun to have air con..

If the car has had a recent cam belt..change it couid be the belt is rubbing on the
Casing I've seen a fair few that have.

The ones fitted with air con have an extra guide pulley fitted
Its perhaps possible the bearings in that pulley are dry-failing..

Get some fairy liquid-with the engine running squirt a bit on to the pulley
If the noise disappears/quietens for a few seconds it l be a sure sign that the pulley is dry/fubard..
If you do this be careful that the f/l don't spray upwards and splash in your eyes.

Don't use anything else other than f/l. Wd40 and the likes of eats belts.

*UPDATE* took the car to a couple of lacal garages and they all said the same thing ITS THE WATER PUMP!! They all said too that usually when they change the pump they change the timimg belt coz the old one has to be taken off to get to the pump havent got a glue but i found a garage that has said if i get the parts they will fit for £80. I have priced the parts and they going to be about £66 together so just ordered them off to pick them up now seems like a bargin to me £146 parts and fitted. Thanks for all your help x

I'd solicit opinions on the price here first for the fitting TBH.

The tensioners were taken off and crumbled in his hands! I also picked up the wrong belt so he is going to exchange it for me in the morning as i now have no transport now :( managed to get him to fit for £70 aswell im happy with that x
