1.8 HGT engine swap?!?

Hi there,

I have a 53 reg mk2b 1.2 16v active sport which a few members on here may know, however, I have recently bought a cheap HGT as a runabout as the engine in the 1.2 16v has recently decided to start overheating quite often...

The HGT is a standard Y reg, mk2 and the bodywork is fairly crap everywhere altohough it has only done 53k miles and recently had the variator, cambelt, waterpump ect replaced. The 1.2 16v active sport has been slightly modified, coilovers, uprated breaks, alfa gt interior ect ect....

The question is, is it fairly simple to do a full engine conversion from the HGT to the 1.2 shell?? I literally have EVERYTHING available. A fully working HGT and a fairly good condition active sport shell which I much prefer to the HGT.

I'm just after the pro's and cons for the conversion. Obviously I want more power so I could essentially just use the HGT but I also want to keep the 1.2 shell as I have spent a fair amount of money on it.

Carl.

Re: 1.8 HGT engine swap?!?

The same cars but very different, if you were to basically reshell the HGT with the body of the 1.2 I wouldn't see an issue but if it were just an engine swap well the two cars use different gearboxes and shifter cables. Suspension is uprated on the hgt for the extra weight and speed as are the breaks. Then you'll need to think about the electronics the two cars will have very different wiring looms as the hgt has a lot of extra kit which the body computer will be looking for. And be wired for.

You really would need to do a full reshell which is going to take hundreds of hours

Is it worth it? For the amount you will have to swap over is it worth it. Imo i'd break the 1.2 punto and put the money towards upgrading the hgt.

How many issues with insurance and road taxxing issues will u get

Lpts and lots most insurance companies will throw book at you and charge you lots

Upon sayong that you wanna spend many hours and money doing everything why not just fix the 16v 1.2?
Hit all the cooling components to find out why its overheating

My guess thermostat but dont rule out hg if its over heated lots

Well I have spoken to a friend who is a qualified mechanic and he says we could have it swapped over in around 3 days. I would then split the rest of the hgt and sell and scrap potentially making a profit. He said he wouldn't even charge me either...

The HGT engine has done 53k miles where as the 1.2 has done nearly 90k... I know what I would prefer.

This would also be more of a project for now so im just after some general info. In a month or 2 i'll b buying a Honda dc5 type r as a daily so this car may not even be used much.

It'll make an interesting project. Would be good to see it written up with pics.

My guess is that for the type R you'll either have, or be getting, specialist cover anyway.

May be counselling the converted, but do change the cam belt (preferably water pump, too) while the engine is out.

Re: 1.8 HGT engine swap?!?

I will try my best to get a decent write up about it if I do definitely go through with it.

By specialist cover, I guess you mean insurance? If so, I got a quote with privilege insurance for 800 fully comp for the dc5! bargain imo.... for the HGT, it was 430 fully comp which also isn't too bad.

Regarding the HGT engine bay; the cambelt, water pump, variator, coolant flush, oil change filters ect have recently been changed around 2000 miles ago so that's all well and good there .

that quote was for a HGT thats passed all the standard to be on the road
The 1.2 was passed as a 1.2, sticking a 1.8 in there it means it wont be upto standards

As said, Suspension, Wishbones, Brakes F+R, Some electrical gismo's, its alot of work!

If you do do it - Fair play and well done - but PLEASE GIVE US
lots of naked piks of the car as your do bits, it helps other members when were trying to explain things

Good luck!

Ziggy
