I am after advice on how to rectify my beloved 2005 Fiat Punto 1.2 16v Dynamic Speedgear which I have owned from New.
Recently I am getting "Gearbox Failure" indicated on the Dash.
It seems to be happening whilst I am driving and at, or shortly after applying the Foot Brake.
The Gear Position Indicator on the Dash briefly changes to R then back to D. All connections have been visually checked by me and appear to be in good order. I am an Electronics Engineer so have delved further into attempting to diagnose and rectify this fault, but to no avail. The centre-console / gear selector surround has been stripped out revealing a PCB on the LHS of the Gear Selector Lever. This PCB appears to have 3-Hall Effect Sensors which appear OK. I have re-soldered all connections as a precaution, but still no success. If the Gear Selector is placed in D, all displays OK. If the multi-pin connector to this PCB is un-plugged and the Gear Selector is placed in D, then Gearbox Failure is indicated.
This problem is Intermittent and rather annoying to say-the-least. I have un-plugged one-at-a-time the following;
1. Gearbox ECU Connectors (under the passenger foot-well kick-plate).
2. Front Top Gearbox Connector.
3. Engine Compartment Fuse-box.
4. Main Fuse-box (right of Steering-wheel).
5. Both Gear Selector Loom Connectors (within centre console).

Unfortunately I do not have any facility to check / analyse / clear any saved Fault Codes.

If anybody can offer some advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

I am located in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.

Many Thanks in advance.

Rear light cluster with the reverse light earthing pin

may look okay, but alot of similar problems, like yours
Displaying R when driving and braking is the backflow of electrons activating the reverse light

The warning comes up as it thinks its in
Drive - Going forward
But it see's the signal that reverse is engaged/engaging, and gets confused

Give the earthing pin a darn good clean with some emory paper on a flat screwdriver

Hello everyone, I have bought a 2009 1.4 Petrol Fiat Grande Punto with 62,000 and one yrs MOT. The car is really in nice condition and has a Dualogic gearbox.

But I have an annoying problem when driving the car. As I slow down to say the traffic lights the auto box goes straight to Neutral and the car will not then go back in gear.

If I switch off the car and wait the car carries on as before, but does this more when slowing down.

Has anyone else had this problem? a friend tells me to check the gearbox ecu in the passengers floor well make sure its not damp/damaged and so on..

Is it true I can just buy another from say Ebay and stick it straight in?

Any help is very much appreciated.

Dear Nickcow,
Last time it so happened that my gearbox fault indicator showed on my tacho too. I removed the gear sticks cables and accressories and try to check. Nothing wrong. After few weeks enduring this, at last, found out that it was due to the gearbox cable where it was been tightened a little bit over at the adjustment nut at the gearbox side. Slight loosening and it works fine.
Just sharing if it may be the culprit.
