Hey all.

I have a 2001 Mk2 Punto, ~90k miles on the clock.

In the past few months it has started behaving a bit strangely and (having read around) I'm now starting to worry that it may be a head gasket issue. I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me find what and where the fault is.

The first issue was the odd bit of power drop during the winter, where the car's power would suddenly drop down to a crawl before picking back up to normal. This would only happen from time to time and only in the first few minutes after starting the car - whenever it did happen it would be over in a few seconds. It also hasn't happened since the weather started getting a bit warmer.

More recently, however, I have noticed the car sometimes has a rougher idle than normal. Again, this is only from time to time and it's nothing major, but when it happens there's definitely a noticeable amount of 'chug' when idling.

Coupled with this, I've noticed the car going through oil at a faster pace than I'd have expected (though I'm not sure how long you should expect oil to last on a 12 year old car... I reckon I topped the oil up last around 6 weeks ago and the marker now shows it just over half full) - coolant levels seem to be dropping quicker than I'd like too... probably at a similar rate to the oil, if not faster.

All of this is coupled with a seeming drop in fuel efficiency in recent months.

That being said, there's no sign of any creamy substance in the oil or, from what I can see, the coolant. The car's thermometer has spiked from time to time but when that happens I refill the coolant and it behaves again.

So does this sound like the head gasket? Or is it a mixture of old age and perhaps a water pump problem?

Is there a way for me to test or would I need a mechanic to tell me for certain?

Thanks in advance!

I started reading seein oil and struggling for power when cold

Which id say compression test for a blown ring set on 1 cyl

Bit I thought cold + rough idle + no power = misfire or poor ignition

But when you say coolant loss
Oil loss is less coolant it reverts to hg

It reverts to possible hg confirmed by
A compression test
A cooling system pressure test to see if water ends up in cylinders (plugs out)

You wont see oil or coolant as it sounds like its been burnt hence **** poor mpg

What colour is the exhaust smoke?
Plumes?
Wisps?

Very white?
Light blue?
Grey?
Black?

If you want a quick diagnosis, pull out all 4 spark plugs and check their colours, any sign of RUST, or a "steam cleaned" appearance will point towards HG failure ( water in the cylinder bores),
the Pressure/ compression test is more scientific - BUT - requires specialist tools you may not have today..,

I'd have to double check but last time I was behind the car while it was running I'd say it was grey - there's definitely not enough of it (at a distinct enough colour) for me to notice while I'm driving.

Thanks, will try that later.

no problem !,
If you're noticing significant coolant loss, you'll probably notice a colour difference between the 4 plugs.,
also MAYO in the oil filler cap / bung,
Charlie

Incorrecto!

You may not see any mayo at all

it all depends on how and where the HG leaks/blows

If the OP is having serious water loss and oil loss, it could forwell that both the Oil and water channels are leaking into the combustion chamber
So therefore, no water or oil is been mixed as its been burnt straight off!

Coming back to this - from what I can see the exhaust smoke is clear - no noticeable colour whatsoever.

For what it's worth it didn't have any issue on the emissions test of the the NCT (Irish MOT), though I'm not sure if that tells you much in itself.

Mayo on the dipstick is more telling than on the filler cap. But I've encountered blown HGs with neither.

£15 buys you the best diagnostic tool out there. You can then spend another £20 on an code reader.

Got a link to where I can buy them?
