Hi Dave - sorry - been outside!
Yes I can see the ECU ok. I just couldn't see an obvious earth connection.
Do those 2 big cables need any special jiggling to pull off?

I am trying to get the car started. As I put in my "red steering wheel" post, I recently had a new key coded. Last week the power steering light came on, and it woul go off even after chatfiong the battery, so I decided to fit a new battery as it needed one. Once the new battery was fitted the code light and the mileage display are flashing and the car won't start. I think it's immobilised. I am trying to get hold of the guy that coded it, but in the meantime I thought I should check earths and any plugs that might be loose. I didn't realise the ECU had an earth of its own, so that's what I am trying to do.

did you check new battery was fully charged? low power can make mileage flash

Funny you should say that. I put the battery on at first and spent a while cranking it over before I realised it wasn't starting, and then the penny dropped about the immobiliser and the key coding. So I took the battery off again and put it on the charger. It was only on about 12.4v. So I fully charged it off the car, put it back on but it made no difference.

OK, so I removed and cleaned the earth connection at the top near the ECU, but it then goes in to a loom which runs across the back edge of the rocker cover so I am not sure where the other end is. I have cleaned the earth on top of the gearbox, and also, (I'm not sure if this is an earth or not) a small black box connected to the passenger side inner wing, below the headlamp assembly. Also checked that the fuel cut off was not popped up.
None of the above has made any difference :(

Yes I've tried the original and the new key. I've also just had a look around the ignition barrel. I tried moving the cable that goes from the ignition switch to the fuse box around a bit in case that had got kinked, but again no change.
It seems most likely to me now that whatever the coding guy has done worked fine until the power was interrupted. He is not answering his phone so I suppose he could be away. He said to my son when he had the key made that if we need any more doing it will be easier from now on as he has all the coding information that he extracted from the car stored on his system. So I am hoping that means he has the information to get the car started .
When my son texted him on Friday to tell him what had happened his first reaction was that he'd never had this happen before on a Punto and maybe the ECU had got spiked somehow. I don't know what to make of that because up until changing the battery the engine was starting up fine. It was just the power steering that was a problem up 'til then.
